Great British holiday

Just listening to the news today and the discussions around we holiday, we not holiday?.

It seems that the conversations are now moving towards the potential of a great British holiday!. I know we are in the middle of a pandemic I know it’s really tough but is it really selfish of me to be gutted that this is the best that can be offered. Having not had a holiday in the sun abroad last year, not really feeling like having any break at all over the past year apart from work work work , I had pinned hopes on some form of holiday abroad.

in writing that, it does sound incredibly selfish, but it feels at the moment with the weather, dark mornings and dark nights, not a huge amount of optimism flying around that actually something to hold onto such as a holiday in the Sun didn’t feel too much to hope for.

I guess we should be grateful for small things and something like this it’s not really that important but it is good for the soul and for morale.

To be honest, the UK is a great place to holiday. But a good-weather holiday it isn't. I love trying to get to places such as the Lake District as often as possible, and when you get good weather it's as good as any foreign holiday, but obviously it has it's fair share of write-offs. We really need to look at what we do with weather over here.

I know what you mean about wanting sun though; Winters here are so depressing. Dark when you start work, dark when you finish and always the worst weather at the weekend. And it seems to go on so long. It's so nice to pop somewhere warm for a week in February just to have a break from the cold and dark, and hopefully return as the weather starts picking up over here.

I feel for you Brits. I am fortunate to be planning a road trip taking in Serbia, Bosnia, Kosovo, Croatia and Hungary at Easter and the planning is an extremely soothing process. Fingers crossed that it does not get derailed by unforeseen circumstances.

I don't think there's anything wrong with wishing for a bit of normality. (y)(y)

I too like a trip abroad, I can understand your devastation.

Have only taken holidays in Britain for the last 25 years, so the prospect of not getting abroad this year isn’t an issue for me.

Would normally have booked a cottage somewhere in the UK by now though but haven’t bothered this year so far.

The Mrs and I go abroad 2 or 3 times year and really enjoy them (and are really missing them).
However the holidays I remember most were when I was a kid in this country.
We used to head for the south coast or Gt Yarmouth . My Mums brothers and sisters and my dads sister would all go with their families. We used to camp and there would be up to 20 of us. We kids would have the time of our lives on the beach and the camp sites. Wonderful times.
Funnily enough we took my son on many a forgien holiday including several times to disney Orlando but he recently told us his favourite holiday was when we took him and his cousin in a caravan at Skeggy.

I have loved my foreign holidays over the years. Especially if you can guarantee good weather and great entertainment.

However I have had a few years staying at home, took up surfing with my teenage sun, just messing about in the sea. For this you done want sun and high pressure as the waves arent great. If the sea is cold, stick on a wet suit. Plenty of opportunity to find somewhere for a drink and a meal.
The Uk has a lot to offer.

I think I've had more than my share of being abroad, but possibly it'll be a while before I feel I want to be so close to a couple of hundred people for hours in a plane , so maybe living in North Yorkshire with trips to Cornwall and The South West will suffice when restrictions are lifted.

When you do look at what we do with the weather over here I think you’ll find the answer is to go over there.

I'll be gutted like if no foreign holiday 2 years in a row hopefully by October atleast. The thing is probably safer holidaying in Mexico than I am going to Kent varient Central Cornwall

Living in North Yorkshire and trips to Cornwall doesn't seem such a bad deal

ER , I wouldn't be so sure about that,I believe Covid-19 is quite bad there at the moment

Dont think youll be holidaying in Meheeco for some time fella.

Don’t get me wrong , I love the lakes and North Yorkshire and am a keen hiker and mountain biker but for me these are places to go for a long weekend . I’d normally be skiing about now and this is the first time I’ve not gone in about 20 years so maybe it’s that plus a year of doing U.K. holidays that we’re ok but never as good as 2 weeks somewhere exotic or a week on a Greek jsland. U.K. holidays were manic last year , the lakes were rammed everyday and I was just hoping for a little respite !

We’re a 5 holidays abroad a year couple, going from that to none last year was hard to take (good for the bank account I suppose)
same this year, not booking anything abroad .
but we’ve never been far south west of England , so we’re planning on doing that later in the year....if we’re allowed that is
