Great Day out at a proper community club

Clapton Town Community Football club play at the delightfully named
Old Spotted Dog Stadium in the Eastern Counties League Division 1 South.
It’s not far from Upton Park.
They were promoted last season and Saturday saw them in the final game of the season at home to high flying Harlow Town trying to secure the final play off spot.

The values of the club are really clear and in your face. From the rules as you go the turnstile to banners throughout the ground.

As we approached (5 of us) we were a bit worried to see ‘sold out signs’
Clearly looking a bit lost a bloke told us where to queue if we had tickets. Told him we hadn’t so he pointed to another bloke saying he might be able to help.
He said he had 2 spare, quickly called out, to those queuing to get in, for any spares and within seconds we had the 5 we needed.
No money changed hands.
The guy simply said it would be nice if we made a donation to the club when we got in.
This had been a frantic and confusing couple of mins so I said ‘hang on, have these people just handed over tickets they had paid for ….to complete strangers’.
The simple response of ‘yes’ said it all really.
We gladly made donations.

Facilities are rustic.
2 Portaloos
Small club house but for the big days they sell cans of beer on a trestle table.
Local Craft beer £4
And the cider is advertised on the price list as
‘Thatchers (DEAD) £2.50’

The atmosphere is mad.
Local Italian ultras behind the goal (no more than 30
A further 150 or so at the side also singing and chanting.

If anyone can shed any light on ‘Gravy Ultras’ I’d be grateful - maybe related to the local delicacy (Pie, Mash and Gravy)

A particular favourite - to the tune of Sweet Caroline ‘Free Palestine’

There were families, groups of men, groups of women it was just a fun place to be.

They lost 1-0 but, their nearest rivals also lost so they are in the play offs.
I missed the celebrations to get my train back to Lincoln (doesn’t mean I’m not a proper fan 😂)

I’ll be back.

I was at a local non league game yesterday, fortunately no ultras, and a cracking game too, end to end and quite feisty at times with late goals swinging the match one way then another. The ref came in for some stick as is the norm at any match. Good crowd and an hour in the bar with the teams and management staff afterwards.

Unfortunately it was nowhere near a sell out 😄

No Thornaby game due to league moving fixtures around, so choice was Guisborough (1st div) or Billingham (2nd div)- Wrong choice made

I’ve often seen your posts and wondered what it would be like.
I’ve got a sense of it now.

Who were you watching yesterday

Billingham Town v Horden, Horden had a number of ex Billingham players in their side, one scored a brace, including the winner in stoppage time.

The win might be enough for Horden to make the play offs. A Town win would have suited rivals Synthonia but it was not to be.

The visiting physio threw a water bottle at a section of the crowd giving their manager stick for his poor attitude, he was red carded, as was a player shortly before full time in a seven goal thriller.

Looking at the gate you weren't on your own, that's a healthy turnout.
It was a game that both clubs looking for a win to keep playoff hopes alive. However as Birtley lost the Guisborough still have a chance but must win remaining games because of their 3pts deduction.

Mind you it will be harsh if Shildon miss out in play offs having been the only ones to push Bishops close this season

I also saw a sad sight the other week with Hutchinson scoring for Synners against Thornaby - I guess you had this in previous seasons:(

I think Clapton did a shirt that commemorated the International Brigade and Republican Spain (1936-1939) - it sold out within 30 minutes or so. In a cosmopolitan city of of 9m people with Left of Centre politics, they have created a nice little identity as a sort of St Pauli of London.

A mate did an away game a few years back with them in the Northeast. On the grappa in the minibus on the way there 😂

We're heading to Belper on Saturday for a potential title deciding game for the anchors. 👌

Don't write off the Y&E yet Corcaigh

I'm not, and hope you do it 👍🏻

I noticed that the Clapton game mentioned in the thread opener has the second biggest gate in the country at Step6 with 850 fans. There were four Northern League Division 2 teams in the top ten for attendances at the weekend.
