Has anyone seen David Mellor Tonight on Newsnight

What a smug, toe sucking arrongant ars- in a Chelsea Shirt he is.
Then he goes on to talk rubbish about Chelski over the last twenty years,

Before the Russian puppet turned up we were equal clubs and dumped them out of Premiership before it began.
Making us founder members.

I hate the Sky Premiership but that is a different subject, as apparently football only began then.

Not that I'm a fan of them or feel much pleasure in defending them, but Chelsea had won the league, the FA Cup, the League Cup and the Cup Winners' Cup before the Premier League existed.

They were already a much more successful club than us, not equal.

Add to that 2 more FA Cups and another League Cup before Abramovich took over.

When we dumped them out of Div 1 it didn’t make us founder members of the premier League. That came after we won at Wolves in 1991-92:

Did he mention the nazi salutes we all gave the Duchess of Kent at Wembley

They were not a big club before Russian money came in.
I went to Stamford Bridge a few times in the 70's with a mate who still supports them.

It was then a **** ground and largely empty, see below.

Chelsea were a bigger force than us before RA took over.

Without them finishing 4th in the league and qualifying from the Champions' League, he'd have picked a different club to take over.

That said, they are largely a 21st Century phenomenon: their attendances did occasionally dip below 10k in the early days of the PL (8,923 vs Cov, May '94). However, people made less of a song and dance about attendance then.

He tried to do a deal for Spurs IIRC

They were a big succesful club in the 90s though from around the time Glenn Hoddle took them over, to say we were comparable before Abramovich is plain wrong.

Chelsea were not a top 6 side before Abramovich put £1.5 billion in them. (mid table Premier).

From 1972 to 1997 they only won the Zenith Data Systems Cup?

They were a bit like West Ham now - to me Arsenal, Spurs, MU, MC, Liverpool, Everton, even Villa had more successful histories and going back to 1930s, 40s and 50s I would say Newcastle and Sunderland.

That's wrong for a start.

Before Abramovich:

2002/03 - 4th
2001/02 - 6th
2000/01 - 6th
1999/2000 - 5th
1998/99 - 3rd
1997/98 - 4th
1996/97 - 6th
