Has there been any update on McNair staying or going?

My MoM last night. Would like to see him repurposed in the midfield. Effective pushing forward after sending off I thought.

My guess would be he will get an offer from the club on reduced terms. I think he'll look about and consider options if other contract offers are there.

From a Boro point of view he's a useful squad player. He's played plenty of minutes this season in a couple of different positions. Current contract is probably too high though for what we get in return.

No doubt Paddy would prefer more first team football but will he get that from a Club that can afford his salary?

I would keep him assuming his contract was reasonable - good player at this level

I wouldn't play him in midfield at all, but as a CB, especially in a 3, no worries

I think hes played the best football of his boro career over the past 12 months. Really suits the back 3 and played very well yesterday

On good wages. He will have left us where he joined us as a mid table championship club. If we keep doing the same things with the same players who have taken us nowhere we will get nowhere.

Would probably need to be on half current salary to get a new contract here. So basically just up to McNair really. Will obviously depend on what his agent can get him elsewhere.
Unbelievable that we can let a player who cost approx £5 mill just walk away.
That is football today I suppose.

I think he'll probably go. It's just human nature. He's unlikely to get what he's currently on elsewhere, but will still feel insulted we offer him a pay cut (pretty sure Britt has said something similar when he left).

Fair chance a newly promoted prem side or newly relegated from the prem will take him on a free and pay him more than we can afford. He's vastly experienced, decent age, full international, versatile. Decent squad player for a free.

Almost certainly knows he's leaving. Also as above likely to have a move either lined up or his agent will have a few irons in the fire.

I have no doubt he will have plenty of clubs wanting to sign him on a free. Thats certainly top end champo clubs (parachute payment). Also maybe the likes of one of the clubs that may go up. He'd 'do a job' for a lower end prem side. Especially due to versatility and experience. He's better than players playing for Sheff UTD / Burnley a Luton.

I've always thought it's an odd one with Paddy. I think he's been a terrific signing. One of very few from that monk / pulis time that you'd say we got out moneys worth from (along with Howson). So odd that he often gets pelters. Especially as he's often playing out of position due to necessity.

Yet he's on a contract where it appears money was no object. So we simply can't match or better his current deal. So he will leave for nothing. I wish him well. He's done well for us. Yet as much as I'd love him to stay. 25-30k a week is ridiculous at our level. So has to move on. He will probably pick up a similar wage as he's available on a free. Also a nice signing on fee.

His best position is his position he played last night. If we’re gonna continue with this formation going forward I would offer him a new deal and tell him he’s going to play a big part. I suspect he will have half an eye on leaving though. He’s been here a good old while. Might fancy a new challenge.

Michael Carrick was asked this specific question last week - he sidestepped by saying he wouldn't talk about any specific player and go public on their negotiations.

Its perhaps a pay day signing on fee elsewhere, and that might be his last that will decide it for him Diego.

Probably with Howson one of our best signings since relegation, which is an odd thing for me to say as I've often been critical. Paddy came at the same time as Flint and Saville didn't he?

That second Pullis season was so strange as we were a shoe in for the play offs most of the season despite some unenterprising football. Indeed looking back Pullis had a decent track record with us results wise.

Other decent signings in recent years for me would be Crooks and Watmore, which just goes to show it's not always the flashy marque signings

From Gazette Live - quoted from the pre-match conference earlier in the week.

Michael Carrick says there have been no discussions yet with Paddy McNair over his Middlesbrough future as his contract nears its end on Teesside - with the Boro boss confident his former Manchester United team-mate won't let such uncertainty faze him.

Asked about McNair's contract situation, Carrick said: "There's not really a deadline or a specific time, it kind of over time it naturally gets done. There's not a contract on it. I'm not going to say right now and make a decision right now when I haven't had discussions with players.

"This isn't just about Paddy, it's about any player. There are all sorts of different scenarios, if, buts and maybes. That's a decision for us to make in the weeks and months ahead. Right now it doesn't really make any difference [what division Boro will be in next season].

If the club can negotiate a deal for him, then I would be happy to see him stay. But it sounds like he would need to take a pay cut to stay, so it largely depends on interest from elsewhere.

We could cope without him assuming that Lenighan is back and fully fit.

He's 28 going on 29 next month so he's probably around his peak as a central defender. A bit like us with Lenihan, someone will pick him up. The difficulty is that no Championship team is likely to offer him the same wage as he's on with us, however if they need a central defender then they'll look at the savings from not paying a transfer fee.

If we didn't have him and had a central defence unit of Fry, RVDB, Lenihan and Clarke, we wouldn't put much effort into signing him, even if he was free.

I’m certain he’s a better player than Clarke or Lenihan.
And as good as Fry and VdB have been playing.
