No, I can't think of any other sport that spectators/fans invade the area of play.
I can, it used to happen at the rugby. Quins would encourage it, families coming on to the pitch after games. It was a great idea as we managed to get our friends nephews into the sport, because they were taken by getting to play on the pitch. Sadly those days have now passed, they stopped letting us one when London Broncos shared our ground and never let us back

Once ................ Boro 0 - 0 Wigan (the finest & bestest 0-0 draw I've ever witnessed). At full time the stands emptied onto the pitch with the players appearing in the North Stand director's box to celebrate. My mate and I were virtually on our lonesome stood on the South Terrace so it seemed rude not to join in. :)

P.S. From memory the pitch was cr@p
I grew Ayresome grass in a pot for few years afterwards. So it might have been cr@p from everyone else having done the same before you got down

Boro 1 Man City 0, FA Cup replay., exit via the tunnel.

Re the full-scale invasions we had this week, if I was a player I'd be paranoid about sharps left in the grass. No more knee-sliding goal celebrations. Luckily the season is over.

With people asking should we bring fences back (no!) Remember we had fences with spinning spikes for the Wigan game and the pitch was still filled after the game.

They only opened the gates after lots had gone onto pitch

There's definitely an age thing going on here.

Football is a far more serious event than it used to be. Even when celebrating it seems that many think players and fans should be kept apart so that the players can be praised in a church like manner. How about football hymn books being passed around with official wording so that you don't have to listen to the heathens in the South Stand?

Another one for Wigan. Curiously I was also at the Doncaster game but didn't go onto the pitch. I was in the seats with the Doncaster fans (both of them) so that probably explains it.

Why do people do it? Do you feel as though you are responsible for the success on the pitch, thus require adulation from the crowds that understand that it’s prohibited? Genuinely no idea why people do it apart from copying what’s gone on elsewhere and/or a insatiable desire to boost their social media content.

Wigan home, only because they opened the gates to let everyone on.

Was in the chicken run that game, despite being promoted with a bunch of youngsters and cast offs a lot of the clientele declared us “****”. 😀

Wigan for me… as loads of other posts.

I think the elation of promotion was overwhelming. After years of stagnation - finally FINALLY something positive. Can’t remember how I got on , considering the war like defences on the fences, I seem to think the gates were just opened by the stewards (?).

Can just remember the jubilation with the players - there was no malice… then again, I might be looking back with rose tinted glasses, I suppose
