Hayden Coulson

I don't think the club wanted to sell him, I think they felt forced to or they'd lose him for nothing.

Wood was in the last year of his contract and allegedly refused to sign a new one unless he was guaranteed a starting place this season.

Maybe he's shown enough at Swansea to prove the club wrong for not agreeing to that, I've not watched them outside of our game against them where I thought he struggled, but I don't think he'd shown anywhere near enough in our cup matches or a failed loan spell to be demanding that at 20 years old.

I'd have preferred he'd stayed, but I wouldn't have had him starting regularly for us this season.

No player should be guaranteed games. It is galling, however, when they leave and then 'grow'. It should be a whole lot easier to sign players already at the club than going to the transfer market.

Off field problems.

All of the above, running down contracts, lack of game time, off field problems, surely implies poor management and lack of nurturing and planning. This coupled with 2 million pound players shoved in the sticks indicates there are people pulling in different directions with no strategy, possibly?

Why on earth would he want to sign a new contract with Boro.
Because he has improved and could get in our team , and may want to give it another go here. ( Giles needs competition also )
Extending his contract also means that he has value , so if anyone wants to buy him , like Aberdeen , they will have to pay a fee , instead of going on a free.
Boro win ,Coulson wins. Seems like sense to me .

He's 20.

The lack of game time in his time here was because he was very young, and didn't excel in his few appearances (awful against Mansfield), he went on loan twice and his last loan to Hibernian was one he apparently pushed for against club advice, so it was his own choice and it was a really poor one.
You could obviously argue that the club could have overruled him and tried to send him back to League One, but he may have refused.

The issues with his contract running down can't be squared if he was demanding game time we didn't think he was worthy of before being willing to sign, he's an inexperienced right footed centre back, I wouldn't have had him starting ahead of Fry, Lenihan, McNair or Dijksteel.

Also hard to see how you can blame management for him allegedly being a bit of a nightmare on nights out with Aaron Connolly, they're adults and it wasn't something happening at the club.
The only punishments they can receive are relating to football and fines.

He is on loan for the full season, at the end of which he is out of contract. So under what circumstances does the changing environment at boro make any difference to him or Aberdeen.? He will be free to sign a new contract with whoever he wants... that was my understanding of the situation anyway. Is that not the case?
I get the impression whoever wrote the article didn't have a clue about his contract situation. It makes no sense.

I suppose he might sign a new one with us if the new manager sees him as first choice next season when Giles leaves, but I doubt it.

If Aberdeen want him and he likes the idea of staying at Aberdeen, signing another contract at Boro would be the last thing he would do.

If I was HC, and in good form, I would let my Boro contract run down and be in a position to decide my own future, and possibly negotiate a signing on fee for a new club.

If hes good enough to play champ level then I can't imagine Boro will be the best offer he would receive.

I doubt Aberdeen could match his Boro wages and pay a fee too. My guess is his wages will be £5k to £6k a week.

Wages in the SPL are low outside the Old Firm at about English Div 1 level.

We shall see what the new man says

Any player who demands a starting place in his contract should just be shown the way out.
