Hayden Hackney Highlights

But so far, Carrick has exceeded my expectations. He's let the shackles off a few players, put players in their proper positions (Jones RW, Lenihan/Fry CB etc) and what he's done to Akpom is incredible. He's like a rolls royce in that #10 slot!
Has shown some great tactical awareness, yes the Akpom thing is the obvious one, unchaining Jones from his defensive duties is another. Recognising the limitations of McNair is a third.

On Saturday he recognised that they were getting behind Giles as he pushed on. Carrick stopped Giles pushing on until our midfield were advanced into their half with the ball under no pressure, then Giles pushed up. This made us much more resilient to their attacks. Carrick was spotting the danger and thinking on his feet.

A long way to go, but it's a double thumbs up for me so far, I don't think he could have done any more than he has with what he's got to work with

Is he a Robson/kean style or as scholes type? He is linking the defence and forward up very well.. he is growing in confidence every game..
I think I have said it before but he seems to have that confident glide that good midfielders have, where he knows exactly where the ball is without having to look down.

Some fantastic phases of play in that highlights reel.

We've got super Hayden Hackney...
This is the part that reminds me of Modric and de jong. Glides across the midfield with his head up

That video demonstrates what good decisions he makes and that he makes them either instinctively or very quickly. He doesn't dwell unnecessarily on the ball and isn't scared to carry it forward to drive the team. Excellent attributes for a young lad in his position.

Hackney epitomises the uplift in confidence the team now has since Wilders departure and Carricks appointment. He's been a revelation.

Yeah, it's a small thing but also a big thing, but being able to execute those forward passes between players, along the ground, just adds so much as it allows us to keep momentum without losing a split second waiting for someone to bring the ball under control.

A lot of players at championship level will loft some of those passes to avoid the risk of them being cut out and intercepted.

I think a lot of that will be Carrick's influence, particularly given his comments on that training video. It's not just the accuracy of the pass that's important, it's the type of pass, the weight of the pass.

Yeah, he moves it on so quickly too, doesn't take him ten touches, it's into him, fist touch is to open up, then the second touch is out to someone else. A lot of the time he doesn't even take a touch. Have a look at the body language of the Norwich players when he plays the passes cutting straight through them, just thinking "no way/ oh ****". It was similar to the body language when Chuba did three of them for the second goal, it took them a second or two to even figure out how to react, but by then it was too late.

Passes also on the deck, when they reach the target, makes things simpler, usually for players to move forward onto, rather than the usual passing to where players were, or passing to them in a way where they have to stop, all of these things matter a great deal.

I don't think he's getting this from Carrick, as you just don't learn this in a few weeks, but obviously, Carrick played in a team which did this a lot, and had a master of it (Scholes). He will certainly be encouraging it, and he's picking him to do it of course.

Not seen the training video, and can't find it on the MFC site, do you have a link?

Definitely more Scholes, but reminds me of Modric and Iniesta too. Obviously not at that level, but I don't see why he couldn't get there. Can't really see any flaws in his game.

He's not afraid to tackle either, and is pretty good at it, and coming out with the ball.

I'm just worried now that he's going to get stolen from us, having only till July on his contract. Every club will have seen that highlight reel from the weekend, the phone will be ringing, no doubt about it. 40k views already on that vid.

Hope he stays with us for another contract, being a local lad, but we won't be able to keep hold of him if he keeps playing like that.

Argh, sorry not seen it either just going off others who had and were quoting from it.

I agree it'll come naturally to him, but Carrick will encourage it as you say. Whereas a more risk averse manager (not that we've had any of those over the years 🤦‍♂️) will probably go nuts as soon as one of them is cut out. Which will of course happen from time to time.

They're talking about the video from Carricks first training session i think. Hasn't been any others released since, that I've seen.

"give him it, where he wants it"
"your job's not done until the player you give it to has moved it on"
"always be on your toes, expecting the pass"
"don't have to fire it into him, but it can't be slow"

All basic comments, but so critical and coaching very heavy on a passing style of play, but one where it's progressive, not just about holding onto the ball and going nowhere.

Yup.

Just wish the World Cup wasn't here as we're playing very well, picking up points, confidence hasn't been so high in a long long time and we have no big injuries.

Last thing we needed was a break.

Hopefully we continue at Xmas where we've left off.

Plays with his head up and sees all the pitch. Great highlights reel. Only thing he hasn't done yet is dribble past a few players. If he did that, he would be a top premiership CM player. Let's get him signed up on a new contract and take it from there. Hopefully, he, his agent and family realise he is best off staying where he is and getting more game time.

Suppose the upside is it's a damn sight better than going into the break on the back of defeats and in the bottom 3!

Gives Carrick some time with them on the training pitch too, which he won't have had much of yet.

Would rather not have the break but at least we're going into in probably the best position possible.

Gives the older lads like Howson and Smith a rest too and the chance for a game for some of the lads who haven’t played much in the friendly against Hibs

Hopefully Watmore and Clarke can play some part in that friendly and McNair needs minutes. Although I think he will be off in January

Surprised to see that Smith is only 30. Had the feeling he was a bit older but should really be just about at his peak still.

Great free transfer.

I know he does feel older but at 30 he’s defiently in his peak as you say for his position. Was only a 1 year deal, I’m sure we will extend that. Carrick is obviously a massive fan

His passing has improved under Carrick from an already impressive 84.5% to 94.42%. Number of passes has increased dramatically from 29 per game to 66!

Carrick clearly sees the importance of having central midfielders who want the ball to feet and can look after it, rather than treat it as a hot potato. If you can get CM on the ball with a good range of passing you start to open the pitch up. He knows this from his playing days. Wilder primarily used his CM as a decoy to allow CBs to push on. Didn't work.

Howson is a a bigger data set to look at the difference in how we are playing:

Under Wilder 50 passes at 77%
Under Leo 54 passes at 86%
Under Carrick 62 passes at 87%

We are playing it through the thirds, trusting our midfielders to dictate the game, and we have options ahead and wide that are making runs (Forss, Akpom, Jones, Giles). It's a breath of fresh air, and any young CM player on our radar should be busting a gut to to get a move to this team and this maanger
It's noticable that Howson isn't trying that first time ball over the top into the channels that he used to do a lot under Wilder.

Clearly both of our midfielders are being encouraged to show patience with the ball.

I wouldn't count on it with Championship refs, but I hope he gets some protection. I think he's going to need it.
