When saying that the club has been drifting last few years. I believe hes right in saying that we have recruited expensive players to suit the manager of the day. Only to be left high and dry with them when the next manager doesn't fancy them. Also right saying we need an identity. The Boro way.Have we ever really had one? Maybe 73/74 . We should recruit a manager and players that reflect this Boro way.

There is a West Ham way a Spurs way , a Man U way. What could the Boro way be.
I get the feeling a few managers coming in have made this and that demand and have got the own way. Gibson should be more hands on if it his club which I don't believe it is. He is just the current custodian. And one day he won't be.

Its time we told managers a framework and philosophy they need to work to not give them free reign to dictate the way the Boro is run as a club. From what has been said today and in the past I don't think theres much doubt SG is very happy to delegate too much of the running of his club to others.

Wasn’t that what Woodgate planned and failed to do. Sure he said all levels at the club would play the same way to make it easier for younger ones to easily make the step up.

As a fan who started going when Rioch was manager I always felt "the Boro way" was at least attempting to play football and attack teams. With varying success of course, but I never saw Boro as a long ball team, we've only really suffered that indignity in the last few years

I liked Woodgates philosophy & wanted him in charge after listening to his interview

The Luton game & 1st half v Brentford his ideas were showing, from then on he struggled, as did the team
Will fans be happy with a similar manager playing the long ball game?

We had a clear identity under karanka, it’s just went wrong at the end

I never thought I'd hear the word 'philosophy' associated with Jonathan Woodgate.

I think fans would prefer results first, but closely followed by excitement
After watching the Luton game - and even more so the Brentford one - I did fear we would struggle under Woodgate because of the soft goals we had conceded
1996/97 is however many people's favourite (I thought it was a disaster as it lost us Juninho and other potential signings to take the next step). Robson played a more solid team with experience after we went back up and it led to 11 years in the top flight
Gareth came in, tried to make us more exciting - and we eventually went down
Our next promotion had a team that often got a stranglehold on the opposition under Karanka
Also remember 'boring boring Boro' under Jack Charlton going up with only 4 defeats (2 when already champions)

The boro way is finding innovative ways to cut corners. We gamble, we bundle, we blag and we fumble.

We’ve made two really good appointments since we sacked Southgate.. Tony Mowbray and Neil Warnock.

Chris Wilder will be given the best possible start to his boro career, a fully fit squad capable of a top six finish, a generous transfer window and the time to put his own team together in a written off season with the help of a DOF

I hope he can build on the fantastic core that Warnock has built ala Karanka post Mowbray.

The situation feels very much like the Strachan appointment.. I hope I’m wrong.

The plan was a good one, we just had the wrong person appointed to oversee/implement it.

If we'd had an Eddie Howe in charge it may have worked.

I also started watching during the Rioch era and for me, the "boro way" was a team with a local identity, that tried to attack. During that period, we had lots of youth players come through, and again under Mcclaren. But, over the years I feel the number of youth players that breakthrough has reduced. I am not sure if it is because it is harder to attract quality young players as the bigger clubs have such large scouting systems and academies, or if clubs prefer to develop the players over a longer period instead of throwing them in at the deep end. Or if it is easier to sign experienced players than develop younger ones. I could also be completely wrong with this. ha ha

You don't think Karanka was a good appointment? Seriously?

In what shape or form is this anything like Strachan?

The Boro way historically is free-flowing football with a solid backline and a never-say-die attitude. Rioch's team had it, Charlton's Champions had it, McClaren's team had it, even going back to the 30s with Mannion, Hardwick, Camsell, Fenton etc we had that as a basic identity. If we can find our way back to that under Wilder (who I think is best placed to get us playing that way), I will be incredibly happy.

The boro way for me was all about wingers all through the club in every era there been iconic wingers from wilf to TC to rippers to downing that’s the golden thread but somewhere this has broke down.

Yes it’s a long time since we’ve heard “he’s one of our own” sung at the riverside.

It's because we lost Ron Bone and Dave Parnaby. Both massive factors as to how our youth setup was so good for years.

I think ‘identity’ only exists in the minds of fans
I'll agree with that finny, Jack Charltons team were built on a rock solid defence, with an excellent group of players throughout the team, that defended & moved forward as a unit

John Neals team, were the opposite, exciting, full of goals, so, so good at home, but as bad away & as with big Jacks teams, we were a top division team who should have won something

Bruces team full of youth, similar to JN's exciting blend team but with a never give up spirit, running through brick walls for the club & each other

Robbos team were exciting to watch then after relegation & promotion he went for the safety option & disbanded with his initial total football phylosophy

Steve Maclarens team, good & bad, full of expensive players

Diffetent teams, different brands of football
