HOOF 31 January 2021: 12 Day Quiz - DAY 13 -TIE BREAK RESULTS - Guess Erimus74's favourite Boro footballers

TIE BREAK NEEDED TO SEPARATE THE TOP TWO. Details of the tie break question published below.

The reason I suggested that we had a day off between the finish of this quiz and the start of the Erimus74 least favourite quiz has come to pass.

I wanted a day to run a tie break question if it was required.

Here is the penultimate set of words from Erimus74 for this quiz. He will, of course, be providing his answers to the tie-break question in the due course:

"Last one in a quiz I've thoroughly enjoyed, it got me remincing back through some great players, playing in some great teams, both at Ayresome Park & the Riverside

Thinking of my utility player, as someone said Willie Maddren would have been ideal, Stuey Boam once said at the 73-74 ex players reunion, Willie could play in every position, even in goal & be just as comfortable, but he was rightly included in the 1st 11

3 players who I thought right at the beginning when thinking of this point & all from Ayresome Park

Colin Cooper, who I mentioned when talking about him as a contender for my favourite, was as good on his return as he was when he played in his 1st spell, infact he came back a better player
A right footed left back he fitted in to that role brilliantly, the only occassions I seen him struggle was against Blackpool, we lost 3-1 October 86, Bradford away in the 3rd division & at Forest, he was a great defender, leader, his 1st goal at home to WBA & the winner at the holgate end a cracker against Luton in the 1st division
He was sold & then returned a better player, even played for England
FB, CH he was just as comfortable, even in goal where he deputised in goal for Pears for 15 minutes at home to Villa
2 spells consisting of 346 games, scoring 11 goals
At the 20 year reunion dinner (1986-2006) he stood up & said, '86-89 was an incredible journey, 'Players can go through their whole career & not experience what we did back then & then finished with, 'we didn't realise what we had till it was gone'

Darren Wood, I loved his time at the club, the lad from Scarborough signed for us as an apprentice when John Neal was manager & we had a very talented team that he must have thought, how am I going to break in to this 1st team when i'm ready, well when that time came the Boro were a shadow of themselves to that team, Darren Wood played a total of 115 games, scoring 6 goals & played in 7 different shirt numbers, a vital peg in the team, a valuable asset, he was played in defence, midfield & forward, once established he never missed a game, you just knew a bigger club were going to buy him
In his 1st season he played 11 games, the following 2 seasons until his departure he played every game, wearing shirt No's 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9 & 10
For such a young, inexperienced player how more versatile could a player become, he had a certain swagger about him, you knew he was destined for bigger & better times, he played above his years & eventually got that big money move away, signing for Chelsea in September 1984

Tony McAndrew, the youngest player to score a hat trick for the Boro 1st team, in his 11th game he bagged 3 at home to Sheffield United in a 1st division fixture, one week after his 20th birthday
His debut in 1973 at home to Luton wearing the No4 shirt when deputising for Souness, he was a solid performer, giving 110% every game, he was named captain when Stuey Boam was sold to Newcastle in 1979 & the clubs penalty taker,
he played under 6 different managers at the Boro, big Jack twice, John Neal twice, Bobby Murdoch, Malcolm Allison, Willie Maddren & Bruce Rioch &practically an ever present with every manager, his never say die attitude on & off the pitch, on the pitch his clenched fists, geeing up his teammates, his rugged, no nonsense taking no prisoner tackling, I recall two occasions, one 2 separate occasions when we played Wolves, 1st one, we’d used our sub, McAndrew got injured & hobbled off, got a bandage round his boot & ankle & sent back on with John Neal saying to him, ‘just be a nuisance, which he was, all you could see was this bandage coming off, trailing behind him & then after Wolves knocked us out of the FAC, as coluka rightly pointed out, he didnt hold back, he let the players know what he thought of them, I dont think he done himself any favours with the board at the time
John Neal knew his value to any team & took him to Chelsea in 1982, he re-signed for the Boro in 1984 when Willie Maddren brought him back to the Boro, he was part of the transfer that took Darren Wood to Chelsea along with Boro receiving £72k
Tony Mac went on to play 354 games, scoring 18 goals, over 2 spells at at the club, while playing in 8 different shirt No’s 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11 & sub on 5 occasions
At a 79-81 ex players reunion he stood up talking about his career at the Boro, the teams he played in & said, ‘he thought he wasn't good enough to play in John Neals team, he certainly was, every team needs a Tony McAndrew, 6 managers will testify for that
Bruce Rioch told a group of us at the b86 players reunion that he spoke to Tony Mac at the end of the season & said he would love to keep him at the Boro for the 3rd division but couldn't afford him
Tony McAndrew would be the utility player that I would chose for the Boro"

DAY12Erimus74QuizScores.jpg

Hard luck to weststandwally who slipped up at the final fence. Today I have sorted on names in reverse alphabetical order. To give junosboots a chance to see his name at the top of the list. Also putting westendwally at the top of the list of the joint 3rd placers.

Erimus74 and myself both hope you have all enjoyed the quiz so far. There will now be one final round for the top two as follows.

I am going to ask Erimus74 to name 3 favourite players that just missed out on the top 12. In priority order numbered 1, 2 and 3. Ignoring position or shirt number.

I am also asking coluka and junosboots to post their next top 10 guesses numbered 1-10. Again ignoring position or shirt number.

The winner will be determined by comparing Erimus74's first reserve favourite with the two lists from coluka and junosboots. Whichever list the name is higher in is the winner. If, by some miracle, there is still a tie we will do the same with Erimus74's second reserve. In the highly unlikely event that there is still a tie we I will do the same with Erimus74's 3rd reserve choice. If there is still a tie they deserve to be joint winners.

coluka & junosboots - please can you post your list of 10 names on here before 12:00 noon tomorrow UK time.

Erimus74 - please can you send me your list of 3 reserves in priority order at your leisure.

In the meantime, for anyone interested in taking part in the next quiz please have a look here:

https://fmttmboro.com/index.php?thr...mus74s-least-favourite-boro-footballers.2583/

The rules for the next quiz are going to be slightly different. So there is a poll in the post mentioned above. Where those planning to take part can have a view on one of the rules.

Thanks to everyone who has taken part.

May the best person (CORRECTED) win the tie break.

Just seen this, a thought for Spanishman and Juno’s boots to think about. How about Juno’s_boots and I private message you our respective lists rather than putting them up on here first and once you have both sets, you can post them on here for all to see. That way, neither of us has an opportunity to see the others choices in advance or can change or edit based on who, when or how the other poster orders their list, our offering direct to you therefore being final?

Best of luck Juno’s_boots btw (y)

I have just been going through what I think is the correct order - I had about 20 possibles listed. Those competitive juices are definitely flowing now - ha ha :), so I like the private message idea.

Only problem - how do I private message?

I will also make sure that your suggestions are not published until Erimus74 has sent me his 3 answers.

I have sent you one. You can just reply to it.

If you see the Inbox and an envelope somewhere on the display (top right ish on a PC when you are looking at the forum - it is just an envelope on the top right ish on my phone). You can click on this and start a conversation.

I will also make sure that your suggestions are not published until Erimus74 has sent me his 3 answers.

Awww, why? Put them up once you have both, that way Juno and I can sweat over the others choices and others can pass comment on where they think we’ve maybe gone wrong, making us sweat all the more (I often fall at the final hurdle in true Boro fashion) :D

I am happy to do that if Juno is Ok with it. He has sent me a first list already. I have offered him until 12:00 noon tomorrow to change it. However it is up to the two of you what you two want me to do.

If you both send me your lists with "Final Answer" at the end of them I will publish the two together. Once I have both.

E74 - Fancy, leaving out Southgate and Boateng out of your "best "

Just read an article by writer and journalist Harry Pearson from December 1997 - when he wrote about his grandad who didn't rate Wilf Mannion or George Hardwick.

The reason why according to Pearson, was that his grandad's football pinnacle, was around 1923 - so his best players were from that period - take a bow George Elliot.

Could we all get a bit stuck with the players of our formative years - I try not too my top Boro team , all players in their peak seasons for the Boro

Schwarzer (2004/6)
Craggs (73/77)
Terry Cooper (75/77)
Southgate (2001/6)
Pallister (87-89)
Souness (73/78)
Boateng (2002/2006)
Juninho (1997)
David Armstrong (73/81)
Hickton (1969/74)
Ripley (1987/1992)

That was tough leaving out some very good players which I hated to do. I am not fully happy with the full backs - TC was a bit better at Leeds and John Craggs was helped by Mills more than an average full back was. Rav was left out for wrong attitude the same with Boksic. Woody left out because he came later in his career. Traore had something very special, but Rippers a bit more effective. How the players of the 1970s would cope with the speed of todays game is hard to guess. Big John may have found it too much to be a lone striker and manage the pace of the game today. Mustoe and Hignett I both admired as well as Mogga, but they were touched out.

Apologies for not opening the post earlier.

So here are the selections. Plus a blank results sheet......

junosboots:

1 - Stuart Boam, 2 - David Mills, 3 - Gary Hamilton, 4 - Stuart Ripley, 5- Bobby Murdoch, 6 - Colin Cooper, 7- Frank Spraggon, 8 - Tony Mowbray, 9 - Darren Wood, 10 - Gary Parkinson,

Still can't belive I missed Terry Cochrane!

coluka:

Here goes nothing, placing it all in the AP era
1. Stuey Boam - Captain of my favourite era for me, just shades the top spot.
2. Mogga - He was a fabulous leader and inspiration following a time of huge despair. A legend.
3. Slaven - Willie Maddren unearthed a club legend for next to nothing. Another legend
4. Pears. S - Another inspirational signing and goalkeeping hero whom I think erimus74 will have held in high esteem
5. Ripley. S - Another gem unearthed, tortured many a full back
6. Cooper. C - Great player across the back line on 2 separate occasions
7. Mills. D - A vital part of Charlton's Champions and wont be far from erimus74’s thoughts
8. Hamilton. G - combative no nonsense inspirational player and leader
9. Johnston. C - silky skilful attacking player who was always destained for the top.
10. Murdoch - The greatest passer of a football I have ever witnessed.

There are so many that are also worthy that have not made my cut, I have found it so hard to leave off Alan Foggon, one of the best finishers we have had at Boro and key to big Jacks game plan. He was huge in Charlton's Champions. It may well be my undoing.

I enjoyed reading that. However it was his favourites rather the "best" ones.

Also, I put some constraints on Erimus74 by using descriptions for each of the 12. So for example, we only had one centre half.

So it is not really his best team. Due to the constraints I set in the question setting.

I am pretty sure Erimus74 will be along soon enough with his comments.

Hi Red, you should know me by now mate, the vast majority of my favourite players, teams will always be from Ayresome Park over the Riverside
I did mention Boateng, along with Ince but, my heart strings went for Mustoe, with Gary Hamilton as a close 2nd, regarding Southgate & what a signing he turned out to be but for me he would still be behind, Maddren, Boam, Mogga & Pallister, as spanishman mentions its the players I favour over my years following the Boro

All about opinions mate

This is why I am looking forward to quiz 2. Least favourites. The big question is going to be how many from the Riverside and how many from Ayresome Park. We will find out about that in about 13 days.

Well have to say, I thought some people would have had an opinion on Juno's and my choices. I was hoping people would have commented good or bad on our selections. I thought it interesting we have Boam and Coops at the same level and mostly the same players but at differing points. I think Juno has given this a really fair thought and, given me food for thought, i like his selections. They are selections that are damn good, I feel he has a potential winning hand tbf. (y) I do feel threatened enough to think he may deservedly and rightly win, I still keep the faith though ;). after all, it Is just a bit of harmless fun anyway. It is not the winning, it is the taking part  .

(Juno, I know where you live btw) ;) :D
All the best mate, seriously (y)

Morning coluka, TBH, I wouldnt be against either of yours, or junosboots, juno has even got Darren Wood in there, big favourite of mine & one player I would have loved to have returned to the Boro sometime, IMHO, he played years above his age
I would have been happy if either of you had given me your teams to go with
Youve both certainly understood muy ramblings on about Ayresome Park & particular the 70's
