HOOF 31 January 2021: 12 Day Quiz - DAY 13 -TIE BREAK RESULTS - Guess Erimus74's favourite Boro footballers

Tomorrow will be the big question for you and a couple of others. I think.
I have been in communication with "the boss". We plan to run a 12 day least favourite quiz soon after this one finishes.

I will probably take a day off. After we publish the results from day 12 and announce the winner.

Then start the worst sequel ever the day after that.

There will be so many bad players to choose from. So it will be somewhat more difficult than the favourite quiz. I think.

Brought to you by Erimus74 & Almerimar Incorporated (EAI).

I think you might have to give everybody three guesses for each shirt number as I suspect there are hundreds of equally crap candidates for selection.

That is not a bad call. Will take it into consideration. What about allowing people getting three choices in priority order? Scoring 3, 2 or 1 points. Depending on which guess is correct. A bit more work for me (I have the time). Nothing much more for Erimus74.

Perhaps there should be a rule that they had to have played at least x number of games?

Yes. That seems like a good call. Not sure what number to go with. I would suggest 50 games as a starter. However I would be very willing to change that suggestion up or down based on feedback. Anyone any views?

Results just coming now. Bit of a delay as Erimus74 was out shopping. Then I was making soup. Then I had to fiddle around with the spreadsheet format a little.

Here we are. Just one step away from crowning our winner. We have 3 people who could win it outright. Plus another 5 who might get into a tie break if all of the top 3 falter at the final hurdle.

Erimus74's favourite right back is:

"John Craggs is the only one for men, signed by Stan Anderson for £60k in August 1971, Craggs went on to make 473 appearances, with just one as a sub away to Arsenal in 1980, replacing Stuey Boam in the 2nd half, scoring 13 goals, a valuable member of the 73-74 champions, big Jack stated he was the best attacking right back in the county, IMHO, the best right back never to have played for England
When his football career finished he worked in the late, great Willie Maddren's sports shop
He was also a surprise guest at my 50th house doo, my daughter worked with him at the time, 2010 & mentioned what the team he played for meant to her dad & asked if he would make a surprise visit, which he did to the amusement of other guests, erimus11 among them

Special mention to the following

Gary Parkinson who went on to play 202 games, scoring 10 goals
Gary Parkinson was an apprentice at Everton & become homesick, Everton released him & fortunately the Boro snapped him up, becoming an instant legend in the 1986 team
His 1st Boro goal was in one of my favourite AP games a 4-2 win over Millwall October 1988 when he scored a penalty, he scored two of his 10 goals against Everton, his 1st was a 30 yarder

Brain Laws signed for the Boro when Wiliie Maddren paid Huddersfield £30k for him, playing 108 games, scoring 12 goals, he missed a big chunk of the 3rd division campaign when in february 1987, running up to take a penalty v Bristol Rovers at the holgate end, he put the ball wide, went down & carried off, he’d badly damaged knee ligaments, he returned the following October away to his previous club Huddersfield, came on a sub & scored in a 4-1 win"

Last favourite player for Erimus74 to pick. This is going to be a hard one I think. As Willie Maddren has already been selected.

We are looking for the best utility player. So the closest Boro could get to a Paul Madeley.

As usual, answers in by 12:00 noon UK time.

PS A late welcome to tonymcandrewshattrick. Looks like you have the chance of the biggest change in position if you get it right in the final round. 19th up to joint 14th.

Colin Cooper

On the basis he played all across the defence, been involved in the coaching staff and also played in goal vs villa in the 80’s

Bar Willie Maddren I can't think of a real utility player so I' ll go with Alan Kernaghan.
Could play upfront and turned into a decent
centre back especially in Brian Horton's eyes.

I would also go for Super Colin Cooper - hell the lad even played in goal for us once. Great pro and a very very good defender who could do a job in midfield as well as anywhere in the back line

🐔

This is a real tough one, the two from big Jack's side are already in Maddren and Hickton (didn't he start as a full back?,)

The others that come to mind are those already mentioned, Colin Cooper and Big Al Kerneghan. Maybe there could be a shout for Jonny Howson?

However, I am going to take a punt with a player who seemed a real character and always gave his all, scored some crackers and missed some sitters and moved between centre forward and centre half....Big Billy Ashcroft!

As a utility player you could make a case for a few, I looked at a few, I am sure erimus74 will consider some of these below, and maybe has other favourites
Nattress played CH, RB and CM
Ashcroft CF and CB
Wood, RB, CB, CM
Kerny, CB and CF,
Coops CB, FB
Glover, RB CM
Southgate, CB and CM
Moggas Rolls Royce at RB, CM, CB
Howson has played all over the park just about and done well.

I think this is tough tbh but I am gonna go with who I would pick and say Tony McAndrew though as the real utility man, the most versatile yet maybe not the most cultured, playing 313 appearances and 15 goals for Boro. He played CB, CM also filling in at LB and up front on occasion. He was a rugged no nonsense hard man who always gave 100% imho, Captained the club, he even rightly called the club out for selling assets like Souness, Armstrong, Proc, Hodgey, Johnstone, etc and rightly saying it likely cost us silverware. I accept he wasn’t popular with all, fans and teammates alike, but to me he is the man who wherever he played, you know you’d get his all. Wherever he was asked to do a job and always wore the shirt with pride.

Yes a bit of almost insider knowledge i think from Coluka and I seem to recall his eulogy on Tony Mac a year or so ago. So Tony Mac it is.
