How’s payero doing

Really don't like the idea of Crooks as DM. Midfielders who chip in with goals are worth their weight in gold. We need to keep Crooks in an advanced role. I'm hoping he'll finish the season with double figures in goals scored.
Yeah I don’t like it either but I don’t think we have the answer at the club currently.

We play so many teams in what I think is a very good championship who have players who demand the ball even under pressure and control the centre of the field. I think we are crying out for that player in our team and Payero could be it. I would love to see Payero get a run in the team at the expense of Howson who hit so many high aimless balls today that just surrendered possession to Coventry. I think Payero has something about him, that bit of quality that no other Boro player has. With Jones and Tav Wing Backs and Payero, Crooks and McGreer in the middle with Sporar and Balogun up front we would be a match for anyone

On the subject of him "getting muscled off the ball" I think it goes hand in hand with him conceding fouls. He is adjusting to what is acceptable in English football. Plainly he is not shy of physical challenges he just needs to get the feel of the game and how it is refereed in this country.

There's a good player in there.

I think Wilder hinted in the after match presser that he is still struggling with the pace of the game and movement. He has a look of Traore at times in that you can almost see him thinking out loud 'where do I position myself?'. If he can quicken his game and improve his positional play (the hard bit) then he has the tools to be a decent player.

If Wilder can get his philosophy through to him then he'll flourish. If he can't adapt then it won't make him a bad player, just one not suited to the demands of the formation.
Let's see how the rest of the season goes for him. Probably never more true that the hard work with him will be done on the training pitch.

And unfortunately for him, the players in his position are playing well at the moment. Good for us tho!

I wonder if he'll get a chance on Friday, I'm sure wilder mentioned possibly giving some players a breather although I do suspect that was a bit of carrot and stick action

It's about passing. Howson's was terrible. Just kept hitting up in the air. Payero played pass after pass setting up attacks. He does need to learn positioning but technically he is streets ahead of anyone else we have.

Whether it works for him here I don't know. The formation might do for him. If we give him time I l would think we will see a cracking player.
Howson tank was on MT when he come off. Currently I only see Payero in the Crooks role or perhaps or the left which could be the next step and perhaps a formation change if we are to fit Payero in.

For me he doesn't look like he understands that footballs bounce. The ball would got to him and the next thing he was looking round as he'd lost it.

He wasn't involved when he swapped with Crooks either
he wasn't dominating possession, but he was getting on the ball, in space with his head up and played a handful of good balls forward which is more than Crooks or Howson had done. He's still adjusting, still learning, still getting fitter I would expect too

main issue with him coming on was Howson going off, Howson had been having a great game, not sure if was injured
Were you really at the match. Howson has been hooked in the last three games. All of them justified. The beginning of the end for Johnny Boy and not before time.

Agree with this and Wilder's assessment, he just can't quite get to grips with the speed of the game and it's making him panic a bit, he lets the ball bounce when he shouldn't and he miscontrols the ball quite often because I think he's expecting to be closed down so fast. When he actually has the ball under control he's probably one of the best players at the club at picking out a progressive pass through the middle of the pitch.

It's getting him to the point where he can get on the ball comfortably more often rather than the deer in headlights look he often has.

In fairness, on reflection I do remember him hitting a lot of balls up in the air. I remember one really nice bit of play from him first half though, when he deceived his man with a drop of the shoulder and played a ball through to Crooks.

As a team I felt we played too many balls up in the air. There was a passage of play 2nd half where nobody seemed willing to bring the ball down and we kept surrendering possession. Maybe this goes back to our players needing to be braver and willing to get the ball down and play the pass when under pressure.

I thought Howson was very poor, lost out in a couple of 50/50 challenges which allowed them to counter us, put in 3 completely ineffective corners and was sloppy in his passing. Unfortunately he has played like this more often than not lately hence why he is continually substituted. Although payero wasn’t as good defensively he completely changed the game in midfield and played some clever passes forward. Felt he linked up well with sporar and balogun and could actually see sporar’s runs forward, and in time will be able to pick him out more often than our current midfielders. Really hope the three of them get a run in the side together. He also doesn’t look scared of a challenge so once he has the defensive positioning down we really could have a player on our hands.
