How bad was music in the 90s

Its funny but the presampling era for me upto around 1983 had far better synth pop made on some of the most unsophisticated devices.
Yes I remember watching a documentary that included Human League, Heaven 17, Depeche Mode etc. Some of the gear they were using you would wonder how they ever managed to replicate a track when recording it.

Britpop 😆

Had a few people over midweek for some supper and a glass of something. There was some 90s playlist coming from somewhere, you forget how bad the music was. About the only thing everyone agreed upon 🤣
Surely the other thing you all agreed on was

When we lose we win

Lots of excellent music from the 90s (imo) with Depeche Mode making a string of great albums, Bowie was still reeling them out not too mention there some rising talent like Robbie Williams.

Not sure If it's been posted but to me it's all relative to when you were born. I was born in the early 70s so most of my music influences were from the later 70s through to the early to mid 90s. After that I lost a bit of interest. There's still some good music our there and now and then I find a new band I really like. It's similar to my pathway as a Boro fan. They were my everything in mid 80s to mid to late 90s. I have other stuff to occupy my mind as I've got older. It's just the way life progresses.

You mean there`s more to life than the Boro lyke? ;)

Well that's how it's turned out for me. 😁 in my late teenager years and in later life things took over. I used to remember every score and every goal I'd seen at Ayresome and the early days at the Riverside. Life just took over and you only have a finite memory capacity. Early days with women and then family squeezed those memories out. 😉

I’d say the issue with post (excluding that it’s clickbate) is the fact it was a “90’s playlist” by most probably curated by spotify aimed at a pop’tasic crowd.

That and the poster blatantly wanted to inform us him and his friends didn’t like oasis

There was plenty of good stuff in the 90s, some great bands and albums. Sure there was some rubbish, but at least the rubbish had a bit of charm vs much of the bland MOR stuff now.
The term Britpop was just nonsense created by the media. Grouping the likes of Pulp, Suede, The Charlatans under that banner was totally unfair, they'd been developing long before "britpop"

Loathe as I am to post on the OP's "Look at me I'll say something controversial to lighten up my days in the portakabin" but...

The term Britpop was created by Stuart Maconie for one particular article in Select magazine to refer to 5 or 6 specific bands (from the top of my head Pulp, The Auteurs, Saint Etienne, Suede and Denim) who in the face of the onslaught of Grunge were something a bit different and put a modern take on the 60's pop phenomena which took over the world.

It was then seized upon by the mainstream media and applied to everyone from Manic Street Preachers (heavy metal punk rock influenced) to Cornershop (banghra influenced and going since the early 90's) as well as spawning multiple offshoots all hyped by the NME & MM (Trip Hop, New Wave of New Wave, 2nd Mod revival etc).

Maconie tells the story far better than I, and how he came to regret the term in this FreakZone special in which he explores some of the lesser known coners of "Britpop" and pays tribute to the wonderful Denim which is reason enough to listen.

This century has been the poorest I've heard since the 80's, the 90's were actually a relief after that decade.
