Humbling defeat

This is some take given his embarrassing carry on this season. Priorities I say. Bournemouth were knocked out by Boreham Wood at home last year, I bet they didn’t give a toss when they went up.
For me, CW gave us some of our best football in years and some great results, yes it didn't work out in the end for whatever reason, but I still believe he is a good manager and his records shows this, everyone is in a love in with MC at the moment which is fair enough, but fans turn quickly, some of the comments about players and managers on here who months previously were being hailed as great are suddenly the worst.

If

It's highly unlikely we would have won but adjusting our playing style would have given us far more chance you can't sit back and match up man for man with superior teams. Look at the way morroco got further than some far more technical teams in the WC because they fought and had a pragmatic game plan

And very equally, trying it your way could of ended up 0-8. Then what? Morocco were underestimated by the teams they beat, Brighton never made that mistake.

Nothing you have stated makes up for the gulf in class, imagining it doesn't make it so.

Because Brighton never dropped their game, cup shocks happen when the better teams drop their game or a team gets incredibly lucky.

Us at our very very best in every department doesn't beat Brighton playing like they did today without a huge helping of luck.

They are simply better than us and no imaginary additional fight and effort changes that.

Exactly right.

Teams that far above us, you need to catch them on a bad day to have a chance. That's what happened last season with Utd and Spurs. On a day when they're at it, like Brighton were today, even if we'd played brilliantly it's still not likely to get us anything.

Brighton were excellent but with your attitude every cup tie against premier league opposition would be a foregone conclusion.

We have had results against great teams in the past. There's plenty of underdog results throughout fa cup history against vastly superior teams the one common attribute is the underdogs fought for thier lives yet we never got at them today.

You put them off their game with every trick in the book and make them have a bad day. If you sit back passive and say let's see what you can do you get thrashed like today

You're asking us to play in a totally different way and beat a far better team playing at the height of their ability.

We couldn't get close to them for a very good reason.
Ahhh .. right .. just sit back then .. let them have a stroll about the pitch .. make it easy for them because there's a "very good reason" why we won't be able to compete.

I'm glad we never had the same attitude against Man U and Spurs last season.

Shows you how good a manager Chris Wilder really is, beating united away and Spurs at home in the same Cup last season against much bigger clubs and better squads than Brighton.
Manchester United were in absolute disarray last season. And Spurs were not doing much better. Both slacked it off against us and we had lucky breaks, in both games (United failed to put away numerous chances and Kane had a very tight offside call go against him). Brighton are in great form and put the effort in to beat us.

There's no shame in that defeat, despite the scoreline. It's not a big deal as long as it doesn't affect our league form.

We certainly wouldn't have had the epic replay ties with league champions Everton in 87 with Chris's attitude

The idea was clearly not to tire ourselves out chasing shadows the entire game, let them bring players forward and hit them quickly on the break every chance we get. If we'd ran around chasing them from minute one we'd have been exhausted by the 60 minute mark and would have ended up with the exact same scoreline.

Okay sure (y) I'm obviously not saying it never happens. I love it as much as anyone when we upset the odds.

I'm just saying even if you do try every trick and to foul your way through the game, you're still relying on the prem team having a bad game. Most of the time they'll still beat us.

If it was as simple as just applying a bit of gamesmanship and fouling a few players we could just do that week after week in the league and have an invincibles season. 🤷‍♂️

Nothing wrong with being taught a bit of a lesson every now and then.
Have we learned anything from that?
I suppose we will find out next week
Players might not have, might have been a bit shell shocked, but Carrick will have.

I think he'd figured out that it was a pointless pursuit after about 20 minutes.

Don't get me wrong Brighton were excellent but when steffan is playing short balls to smith time after and he's completely under pressure from Brighton its a completely nonsensical tactic that puts us under pressure. We need to be far more streetwise and pragmatic the same way we needed to be at Burnley.

But when you're just sitting off them and letting them play then you're not giving them chance to have a bad game .. It just becomes a training session for them ..

Well beaten by a much better side today. Definitely something to aim for and underlined how much work will be needed on and off the pitch to become an established prem side.

That said, it's probably one of the worse performances under Carrick, think we paid them too much respect, although it probably wouldn't have made much difference to the result.

Long term it's a distraction we don't need so no tears from me tonight.

I'm not sure it would have made much difference to be honest. They're good enough to play through us even when we go tight.

Players gave up in my eyes. Hull played fulham , a similar standard to brighton and didnt concede 5 at home. I bet sheff weds dont concede 5 vs newcastle.
