I do like Matt Clarke

When everyone is fit it goes;
First choice - VDB / Clarke
Second choice - VDB / Lenihan
Third choice - VDB / Fry
Imho.

It’s almost pointless including Lenihan at the moment tbh he’s not gonna play again this season.

I would have McNair in before Fry too.

He’s definitely a threat at set pieces mate, our only centre back who really attacks the ball. Otherwise he is limited I agree!
 
In my opinion there’s not much between fry and Clarke on the ball but I think Clarke edges it.

Heading and tackling is where Clarke looks much better. I think he’s won more headers from attacking corners in the last two games than Fry has in the last 12 months. For a big lad he has zero aggression and it really lets his game down.

Fry was great today, got back a few times using his agility. Clarke was outstanding, level headed, offers assurance. He was the focus of Barlasers corners initially 1st half and offered an opportunity, Unfortunately we had Rogers and Greenwood to smash the defence and they couldn’t pull a cracker between them.

Fry was outstanding with vdb at centreback last home game against west brom. We also won at Rotherham with fry and vdb. Our win ratio with clarke at centreback at present is shocking. However as ive said numerous times the biggest issue for us is the woeful fullbacks on both sides who are simply not good enough. Coventrys right back Van Ewijk was a level above our fullbacks and caused us problems most of the game.

Fry has that in him, that random game where everyone thinks he’s class again. He’s average and is weak. Gets bullied way too often. If we want success in this league we need to make him a sub.

I disagree entirely the centrebacks often and in particular with fry get blamed for goals conceded when the defensive problems are in other areas. Yesterday we had major problems on the left with engel badly exposed due to coventry over loading and Greenwood tracking back like it was a school game. On the otherside frys partner clarke was practically immobile after taking a knock in the first half. Yet according to you fry was primary culprit for the defeat. Fry is the least of our problems. We have only 1 half decent fulback at the club in the injured tommy smith and even he isnt that great. Until we recruit some better fullbacks we could play any combination in the middle and they will get badly exposed from wide areas and results like yesterday are inevitable. We must have one of the worst pool of fullbacks in the division.



Smith - steady eddy middling champo full back
Engel - lacking championship experience poor defensively
Bangura - ditto engel lacking championship experience poor defensively
Dijksteel’s - Consistantly inconsistent can play well and can have absolute shockers cant be relied on
Vdb- decent defensively but not his natural position poor offensively
Coulson - absolute garbage in every aspect amazed he was given a new contract
Obrien - played very well at left back but not his natural positon

Until we get two good championship fullbacks into the club we will always be poor defensively stop blaming fry and the other centre backs
 
My only concern with clarke is the left channel between full back and Centre Half when Engel also plays.
Both have a tendency to be caught on their heels and neither are quick. A lot of Coventry's positive play came down that flank

And I completely disagree that Fry isn’t part of the problem. He’s a constant. One good game every so often doesn’t fool me. McNair was even better than him this season.

We have bigger problems we dropped the ball in the summer after expecting giles to sign we must sign higher quality experienced fullbacks in January then you will find Fry or McNair are both good enough to form a solid defensive unit with rvb
