The transfer window.. the players we’ve brought in..mystery players seemingly not playing.. B A L A N C E the hard and the soft, experience and youth.. the golden thread!

It’s 3-5-2

Glover/Dieng/Jones

RVDB/Ayling
Fry/Clarke
Engel/McNair

Jones/Dijksteel
Hackney/Gilbert
Howson/Barlaser
O’Brien/Azaz
McGree/Thomas

Forss/Crooks/Silvera
Latte Lath/Coburn/Greenwood

It always has been.. this is what the drain is leading up to.. mark my words!

Why is Gilbert so similar to Hackney? Azaz is a midfielder? Why does Barlaser sit so deep?
We didn’t buy a striker? What? Eh?

That’s it.

3-5-2 almost always ends up just being 5 at the back which is a containing way to set up if the opposition play a 4-3-3 due to overloads
in the wide areas

It's logical enough if the 'wingabcks' are covering defensive areas they are unable to latch onto there own passes in transition phases

Nobody plays 3-5-2 for a reason, it's too narrow and the only route to the 2 strikers is to hoof down the middle of the pitch

Most modern systems with 3 centre backs and wingbacks also use wide forwards/wingers which turns into a 3-4-3 in transition

Personally can't stand 5 at the back, regardless if you try and cheat and call it a back 3, it almost always just turns into hoofs
down the pitch as it was under Pulis

I don’t really like 352 in general but the problem we have anyway is we haven’t really got the players for it. I think Dijksteel is a good player but he’s very much a right back.

We've played half a game against a £1bn squad with that formation. That's it. Carrick has played the exact same way for every other minute of every other game since he joined us. There is no way we're changing the way we play and most importantly there is no need to.

Our problem isn't with our system but in our lack of quality to implement the system. We've been massively exposed at full back because the fullbacks haven't been good enough and (mostly Greenwood on the left) has left the LB exposed repeatedly. Jones (and Forss) work well on the right to cover but we've not had a proper RB for most of the season. Now we have Ayling and Thomas (and McGree back) I'd expect us to be better defensively on the flanks.

Another issue is Howson is ancient, Barlaser is pedestrian and Hackney hasn't played CM so we get players breaking easily through our middle. Get them back together and we'll be more solid through the middle. Crooks being back would help as well because he does get back defensively but he's too slow on attack. Akpom did an incredible job of picking up the ball and driving us forward and Crooks (or whoever else has played there) doesn't do what he did. Without Akpom it means Hackney does the progressing through the middle which leaves us over-exposed when we lose the ball. Our forwards are pony as well which doesn't help.

Big summer of improvement needed. Keep the system the same so when we improve the squad the existing players are comfortable playing a system they know and the new players can slot in.

We’re not all about fixated positions it’s whatever shape suits out players the most..
