ICI

My dad did, so went to the works family Christmas Panto at this time of year at Billingham Forum, early 70s.

My **** dad worked at ICI Billingham for 30 years as an industrial chemist. I kind of wished I did a yts with ici or British Steel. Everyone I know did either, I was forced into collage and uni. Hated both. Oh well 🙄😁

Started as process youth Wilton 1977. 8 years on EO2 Olefines before leaving to chase Arab money in Saudi. Personally was a big mistake hated it there. Rigs for a while before Seal Sands been here 30+ years.

Did my apprenticeship at no.2 methanol. Finished my time just as the plant was closed down.
Nzed, you would have met John Derbyshire then, aka Mr Methanol plant manager. Great guy, still plays golf at Billingham. What John didn't know about that plant wasn't worth knowing.

#UTB

I do a bit of business in Johnson Mathey and in Wilton too on occasion. Dad worked in the Nylon Plant in the 70’s - was Superintendent when he left.
My Dad worked on Nylon Plant for most of the 70s and 80s. He was a plant manager.

Not worked for ICI but my grandad did… on the cyanide plant.

The stories he told were truly mind blowing in this day and age of hse

I’ve worked as a surveyor on most of the sites but stopped 12 years ago. I’m now a desk jockey in the Wilton Hilton

Worked all over the ICI sites including the NW as a computer engineer early 90s to the late 90s, prior to than did some temp work for Manpower in the stores at Billingham and shifting furniture around for office moves in Billingham House probably late 80s. Not many places I havent been to on the local sites

Oh and I loved at 8-10 years old being driven to Billingham for his 6am shift from Ferryhill at 4:30am before I started school. Fun times. I can still smell the air.

The Chemical Workers song details some of the nasty things used at ICI. Vin Garbutt sang it, but I'm pretty sure it was written by somebody else.

Did an apprenticeship in the early 90s that involved work placements. I was placed in ICI Billingham but it had been mostly sold off or plants decommissioned, I just remember sitting in the canteen for days on end, certain songs like ‘independent love song‘ bring it all back.
I did move to Wilton central workshops afterwards but it had become redpath by then. I got fed up chasing work in the end and left the trade.

I did my year out in the Wilton Hilton at about 1993. Loved it and even got to fly on the little private plane from Manchester to Teesside . Up and down in no time ! My dissertation was a classic ! “The advantages and disadvantages of the ICI Surfactants database system” 😀

I too worked for Surfactants. I also went on the little private plane but sadly never saw Bryan Robson going in the opposite direction. I did my placement year 94-95. My dissertation was about the company’s environmental policies 😂
