If Engel plays on Saturday i think he'll get absolutely tortured

I would go out to use width have Bangura and McGree left, Smith and Jones (i know) right

Dieng

Smith Fry Lenihan Bangura

Howson Hackney

Jones Greenwood McGree

Coburn

2-1 Boro
Greenwood and Josh

Engel looks decent going forward a defender he is not, i think people are getting abit carried away by the other night. He got absolutely done when their young lad turned him inside out before hitting the post.

Hopefully he will keep on improving but lets be realistic on what we have seen so far he needs a lot of work

Except he didn't, he actually got enough of his foot on the ball to deflect the shot onto the post. Carrick said in his post match interview that was a vitally important piece of defending that saved us a goal and probably the game.

I don’t think Engel will start. I can see us going back 5 and being as defensively solid as we can. For me thats;
————————-Dieng ————————
——McNair ——- Lenihan ——-Fry————
Smith —————————————-RVB——
————— Howson ——-Hackney —————
Forss ————————————- McGree——
———————Coburn——————————

Whoever we play is going to be in for a tough afternoon.

Stick with the same backline that finally kept a clean sheet.

Is anyone getting carried away?
Yes they are first half the other night was one of the strangest performances i have seen at the Riverside both the players not wanting to pass to him and him wanting rid as soon as he did get the ball.

Are they though? Has anyone said he’s unreal? I don’t think they have. I think everyone is the same. Happy with his improvement and gave him credit for the performance second half but cautious about him defensively. Also plenty offering concern about him starting tomorrow. No one is getting carried away.

Carrick has never changed our formation since his first match with us.
Not when we played PL opposition.
Not when we played high flying Burnley last season

I would be stunned if he changed the formation on Saturday

This is sunderland we are playing.
How can you fear sunderland?

Agreed. Since I've been following Boro, we've always had the whip hand. 18 wins to their 10, going back to 1989. If you're of the 70s vintage, our record is even better.

There have been clubs, Ispwich and Watford spring to mind, against whom we've had long losing records by which I've felt a bit scarred, and even when losing streaks are ended, I don't look forward to playing them.

With Sunderland, it's the other way around. Only a fool would deny they've started better than us, but I'll be a little disappointed with anything less than 3 points tomorrow. I feel this every time we play them. Of course, if you play someone enough, every dog has it's day, but that doesn't change my expectation on each occasion we meet.

Given a choice I would play Dijksteel and Bangura in this game. Both pacy and Dijksteel is so strong. Both Smith and Engel are quite slow. Not their fault just a fact. The other 2 are less likely to get done for pace I think. Up to Carrick how he sees it though.

Im actually more worried about Smith, dont get me wrong I like him he is a good solid pro but as I have said before we should of probably upgraded at rb.

Smith wont have the pace to keep Clarke quiet and if I was a betting man i would be putting Smith down for a yellow card at some point
yeah but Smith knows what he's doing and doesn't lack confidence. He'll use all his experience and if that includes taking a booking then he'll do it

I think even with our upturn in form we are a mid table side this season and I fear Sunderland tomorrow may just demonstrate that. Hope Im wrong though.

If any of our full backs, or auxillary full backs, we have at th club get left man v man against Clarke/Roberts we are done for.

We need whoever is playing RW/RCM/RCB and LW/LCM/LCB to be very attentive and ensure that we have bodies in and around the full backs to provide cover when out of possession.

Going to take a lot of hard work and attention.
