If you were carrick right now what would you do. Us armchair manchair managers

I'd go youth team. We've had moments like this before but don't quote me on it. To my memory downing and malcom Christie both made a mark due to injuries in the squad. I know Christie wasn't youth team but he got more game time than he expected due to injuries. He spoke about it in under the cosh which was a really nice interview.

I've seen small amounts of of finn cartwright, pharell Willis and law mcabe who came on last week. Can't really comment on mcabe cos to my recollection he only touched the ball once maybe twice. He was absolutely buzzing leaving the pitch though and that's a kind of passion that could drive him. And both cartwright and Willis genuinely look decent.

Its only really RB where we have a major question mark. Im sure there'll be youth on the bench, but not in the starting line up

I don't really see the need for it or a compelling reason. I fully expect 2 from Hackney, Fry and McNair to be fit.
If none of them make it then in Carrick's preferred formation I would go with
Dieng
Howson - RVDB - Clarke - Bangura
Crooks - Barlaser
Silvera - Greenwood - Rogers
Lath

To be honest, I would like to see Greenwood get a run of games as a #10 anyway.

To be even more honest, I would prefer us to playing 4-3-3 or even 3-5-2 rather than 4-2-3-1 though I do realise Carrick plays a very odd version of it.

I'd stick with same we are playing good(ish) football. Our defence has been bad all season with or without injuries so not much we can do there.

I'd go...

Dieng

Howson rav Clarke bangura
Cartwright barlaser
Jones crooks greenwood
Laf

It would be a massive gamble, but some other gambles have paid off this season.
The big problem with my 11 would be lack of defensive in the midfield, but we have to fill the positions some how

Work on getting tighter to the opposition in wide areas in our half away from home, we are allowing too much space on our flanks and whether that's crosses into the box or efforts from range we are not getting close enough to the opposition in our half, I know it's a lot to ask given the fluidity of the team but I do think if we could just reduce that space and the opportunities it presents we'd be see a massive improvement in the goals against column, chopping and changing full backs hasn't helped but for me it's the one area that's costing us at the moment.

Away from home, I'd like to see the area between the centre halves and the midfield a little more condensed to make us harder to score against. I think our centre halves are more adapted to dealing with crosses rather than players running at them centrally. I'd rather surrender the flanks than the middle of the park.

Dieng

Bangura
VDB
Clarke
Engel

Howson
Barlaser

Latte Lath
Crooks
Greenwood

Coburn

With no Jones, I think we need some pace in the team out wide so I would move Latte Lath out wide.

I would definetly bring Greenwood back in for this one for Rogers and I’d like to see Coburn back up top.

If Hackney and Fry are available they come back in the side.

I would be getting my footie boots polished and a new kit ordered from the club shop. Then controlling the midfield like the good old days at Man U whilst Howson covers at right back . Because if he is anything like most blokes his head will be saying I could still do a job in midfield during an injury crisis, but his body will be saying "Ha, ya jokin' aren't ya!" 🤣.

Very original way to start another thread about the potential line up for Ipswich game.👏

As Parmoboy says

If neither Fry or Hackney are back for Ipswich I'd go:

Dieng

Howson
VDB
Clarke
Bangura

Barlaser
Crooks

Rogers
Greenwood
Lath

Coburn
That's 4 players playing in the same role as they played the week before. That sort of wholesale change is just asking for trouble.

Stick with what went well vs Preston and bring in Greenwood for Jones, Clarke for McNair and then Engel at right back (a right back playing left back isn't uncommon so the opposite shouldn't be either).

I understand what you're saying but I also feel playing a LB at RB is asking for trouble.

We haven't really had a settled side all season anyway. Wholesale changes have had to be made quite often this season.

It would have to be bangura at right back rather than Engel. Bangura is much more comfortable in his right than Engel

In terms of team selection it's really difficult without knowing the standard of the U21 players but I think he needs to give at least one a chance against Ipswich otherwise it's going to end up with too many square pegs in round holes.

In terms of strategy, I would be looking at game management. Our philosophy is to play out from the back. We stick with it. I get that. But in the first half on Saturday where they had pushed right up and they were pressing us around our own box, they had committed about 8 men into our half to put pressure on the ball. It led to their first two goals and it was inevitable. We had a couple of let offs before the first one went it. It takes very very good players to be able to continue to play out of those scenarios (Man City etc). I feel like we should have switched to a more direct style even if it was just for 5 minutes.

a) we might have created a chance. If we had just knocked a couple of long balls into the channel for Jones to chase because they had committed so many players forward we pretty much had a 3v3 if we went long.

But more importantly
b) we would have pushed them back a bit and given ourselves a better chance to revert back to our preferred style.

Teams were doing it to us towards the back end of last season but for whatever reason teams haven't pressed us as much this season. I don't know why, because that is the way to beat us.
