Jair Bolsonaro

People on here are critising Boris for his handling of the crisis. And as for Trump his ramblings during this time have been comedy gold. But this bloke surely gets the gold star for simply not giving a ****.

From the BBC

President Jair Bolsonaro has downplayed the threat posed by the virus. Asked by reporters for comment after the death toll passed the 5,000 mark on Tuesday, he said: "So what? I'm sorry. What do you want me to do?"

The few snippets I have seen regarding Bolsonaro have all been in a similar vein.

He's just one of a new breed of "strongmen" in charge of countries.

You'll note I don't call them leaders as that could not be further from the truth.

Another cult of personality politician in the Trump mould that shows the worst of the alt right. It’s an amazing thing in life that people least suited to some jobs are the ones that get them.

The only positive in Brazil is that Bolsonaro is getting an absolute hammering by the public, the media and politicians of all parties for his behavior. Trump still has plenty of backing.

This guy is very dangerous he is the ultimate capitalist money comes before everything. he couldn't give a rats about the people of Brazil like trump & bozo they are just numbers on a spreadsheet & expendable. the most worrying thing about this guy with so much of the amazon rainforest under his governance he couldn't care less about climate issues & has no issue with chopping larger parts of it down for profit.

that shows the worst of the alt right.

I'm not sure what "alt right" means and what distinguishes it from "right". I know it stands for alternative right, but in what way are they alternative?

Is it how they view and describe themselves? An exercise in convincing themselves that they are somehow different from the far right politics of the past?
Or is it simply a reflection of the different technology they use in the internet age, rather than any political difference?

Bolsorono is a joke, poor Brazilians have another year and a half of that clown too, unless someone tops him off.

Yes the guy is dangerous etc (when he voted to impeach Dilma, he dedicated his vote to the Army captain who had tortured her in th 1970s), and the Brazil economy is probably in recession ... again. But his approval is around 40% (close to where he was pre-pandemic), and politics there are incredibly complicated. 27 parties in the senate etc. Lula may be able to run again (he just had his convinctions quashed) but it is no means certain that he could beat him.

On the covid response. Yes, he has been even more Trump than Trump. But I find it difficult to take the high ground on this one with Brasilian friends - the UK death rate (per capita) is 50% higher than Brasil. They can't understand why we, like them, aren't on the streets protesting about this too!
