Jason Steele

Steele played about 50 time more for boro than jones and turnbull combined. I thought he was pretty good but I think time told that he had some fragilities that we were able to improve on. Still the best keeper I’ve seen to come through our academy.

Absolutely steeling a living 😂. Sorry couldn’t resist

Thing I always found with Steele was that you'd very rarely see him making saves that he maybe wasn't expected to make. Anything either side of him would tend to go past him. Don't think much has changed

What I remember of Steele was the same issue Brad Guzan had, he’d make the initial save but palm it straight into the middle of the six yard box for anyone following up to tap in. Either couldn’t seem to grasp to push it wide if they weren’t confident to catch and they’d be better off putting it out for a corner than what they were actually doing.

I always thought that Steele got a hard time from Boro fans and was OK. But a feature of his period in goal was the absolute chaos in defence when balls were lumped into our box usually ending with some scruffy, toe poked goal. It was only later I realised how much more solid and composed we were when Paul Smith and Carl Ikeme deputised on loan when he was injured. Karanka was right to side line him.

Have we ever produced a top class keeper from our academy? I know we have had some decent keepers who had good careers but most other positions we have produced some good players who played international football but can't think of any keepers. I'm sure someone who has a larger knowledge of our historic players can think of some.

Ross Turnbull has two FA Cups, a UEFA Cup and a Champions League medal. And played under Mourinho. Always makes me laugh.
I think he could've been the new Schwarzer but he came into the team at the wrong time and I thought he was an unlucky keeper, he'd dive one way & then the shot would get deflected the other.
You can't argue with that trophy haul though.

I recall he was not rated by many on here before he left. How come he's good enough for Brighton, and how many keepers have we had since then.
He isnt good enough for Brighton though - one league appearance in nearly five year. Do more research.

Wasn't he binned off by Karanka for Meijas when he first arrived? Then Dimi was brought in when Meijas proved to be a bit of a duffer.
He got a red card karanka’s first game in charge (or maybe the one before that) and he never forgave him for it.. karanka’s first naughty step moment. fine for our jase to accept and to get his head down in training to fight for his place back in the side. Karanka want having any of it. put Meijas straight in from Real Madrid reserves/u21s then when he broke both of his wrists Dimi was was preferred.. mogga offered him a lifeline and saved the day!

Signed a new deal yesterday with Brighton until 2025, good luck to him. On the few occasions I've met and spoken to him, he comes across as a really nice guy.
Brighton fans love him though it’s for his enthusiasm and not so much his ability, he cheers every chance, gets in the middle whenever anything’s kicking off and celebrates every goal like they’ve just won a cup final. He’s an adequate back up but not consistent enough to be anywhere near first choice.

He’s mediocre at best. Was awful for us albeit still quite young in Keeping terms when he broke into our first team. He had a nightmare at Sunderland too.

Plenty of bang average keepers out there making a cushty living from turning up to training every day and sitting on the bench - some not even that often.

I didn't think he was great for us, but never deserved the ire directed his way.

He was, I think, 23 when he last played for us. That's no age for a keeper. Fans talk about his howlers: I don't think his worst would make Brad Jones' worst 10 list.

The worst I can say about him is he's been happy to be a career back up. I respect Connor Ripley's approach in being Morecambe's number 1, but maybe I'd be the same as Steele if I were a pro.
