Joe Root resigns

I don't see an obvious replacement and I don't really think anyone within the current setup would have done a better job?

Having said that I do think it's the correct decision and should have been done before the windies tour.

It cant be broad as surely it’s about looking long term building for the future and ahead to the next generation.

But they also have to be worthy of that starting spot so we can’t shoe a token in their as they need to be good enough to start. Stokes is the obvious one as he ticks every box but it seems he doesn’t want it.

Was inevitable I suppose.

No obvious replacement, I really don’t think Stokes has the resilience to do the job.

Can't be Buttler, Foakes has taken his place (unless he plays as a specialist batsman, which is unlikely).

More than likely it'll be Stokes. He's the only other guaranteed starter.

Inevitable. I’d put in a steady ship. Step up Eoin Morgan
Morgan hasn't played Test Cricket for 10 years and will retire soon anyway. He'd be a great choice but too late late for Eoin unfortunately. A successor will be hard find, and the opening batsmen will let down whomsoever takes on the role, which is a poison chalice with those currently available. Sad for England cricket.

Right decision, brilliant batsman but just not inventive enough as a captain, though has been massively let down by his team mates failing to step up.

Morgan is not an option for red ball cricket, he can barely string two one day games together these days due to his back.

Really, only Stokes, Bairstow and Buttler are decent options.

I think Stokes would be a mistake long term, Stokes just needs to be Stokes. Bairstow is too inconsistent with the bat and captaincy may make that worse and Buttler is probably just too nice for test cricket.

English test cricket is in a terrible place right now.

Honestly I’d give it to Broady.

Stokes is way too overworked as it is, the hero of all three teams.
Not Broad surely to God.
Can't we actually have a captain?
Vince is at least a County captain.
Morgan should have got the lot as captain years ago. People said he wasn't a Test batsman worth his place. Well playing others hasn't exactly seen us score lots of middle order runs has it?
Never has England Test cricket team needed a captain more.
