Joe Root

Perhaps the last year has helped to give him some perspective on what is really important in life, which might have lifted a bit of self imposed pressure on his shoulders as the skipper.

One thing is for sure, he was on another planet to every other batsman in Sri Lanka, which puts him back in that Kohli/Smith/Williamson bracket. Let's hope he can keep it going in India against their better bowlers.

Great player. Everyone has dips, even Steve Smith recently. Says a lot about a batsman how they respond to them.

I know I'm biased, but I really wish Jonny Bairstow had been included. With Crawley's injury, he's perfect to bat at 3, is great mates with Joe, and plays spin as well as most. Looks like India will play 3 spinners!

Michael Vaughan states on the BBC website that Root will overtake Cook as the leading English runscorer. Made his debut at 22 and he's only just 30.

I'm sure I heard on the Tuffers and Vaughan show that England have never lost a match when he has made a century, that is some stat if true.
