Joe Root

My absolute sporting hero, which feels a bit weird seeing as he’s 20 years my junior. Well played Joe. 👏 🧢

Sibley needs to crack on now though. He's done his job. Score runs or get the big hitters in.

I spend my life when tests are on watching him move up the all time test run scorers list.

Any how great knock and I hope when I wake up tomorrow he's turned it into a "daddy hundred".

I feel Joe Root has underperformed stats wise relative to his talent. That's not meant to be a criticism of him as such, as I think he has suffered from being moved up and down the order, as well as a lack of support from the rest of the top 6 on a regular basis. The captaincy also seemed to distract him initially but he seems to have got to grips with that.

Everything is now in place for him to have the golden years of his career. He's just turned 30 and I really hope he can go on to score another 20 centuries over the next 4-5 years. Surely only fitness issues can stop him eclipsing Cook as England's leading run scorer and if his back holds up long enough, he's got a realistic chance of catching Tendulkar as well.

It’s astonishing that only 18 months ago the experts where saying he should be dropped. Perfect example for the old adage ‘Form is temporary - Class is permanent’

I know this doesn’t matter now as he got out anyway, but the last thing Sibley needed to do was ‘crack on’.

This is a 5 day test match (not a T20 game), in India on a dry pitch that will disintegrate as time goes on. 1st innings runs are like gold dust in those conditions and you try and extract every single one of them.

We need try and bat all day tomorrow if possible, get as large a score as possible and then hope to put a bit of scoreboard pressure on them. Trust me, batting in the 3rd and 4th innings will be nothing like Root made it look today.

Crack on now. Quick big runs give plenty of time to bowl teams out. (y)
Joe to stay there and the other end to have a crack at it. If a couple of wickets go down cheaply drop the anchor.

BBC Cricket Social statistician Andy Zaltzman: "The stat that grabbed me today is the list of players outside of Asia who have scored centuries in three consecutive Test in Asia: Alastair Cook against India in 2012 and then Hashim Amla, Jacques Kallis, Brian Lara, Ken Barrington, Garfield Sobers and Everton Weekes. It's an incredibly illustrious list."

It ain't half.

No aussie on that list?

That is some list.

Exactly, and with the pitch playing so flat no need to rush anything yet.

I can't agree zzzzz. Last time around we scored 450 batting first and lost by an innings! Lose two wickets in the first hour tomorrow and we might not even get 450.

Our best chance of winning is to score 600+ so more of the same is required tomorrow. See off the last of the new ball in the first hour, hopefully without losing a wicket. If we do that and have Root and Stokes well set, they can score at 4 an over without taking any risks. Basically do what Root did today - 110 balls to get to 50 then kick on.

He's seeing the ball so early and must be seeing it almost in slow motion.

It must feel incredible to be at the top of your game like that.

Long may this run of form last!

We'll see. This has the makings of a very good team bristling with talent. I'd like to see them have a go.

BTW. Sibly did his job but he was scoring at 1.8 runs an over. That doesn't win you a Test Match. You won't get beat hanging around like that but this team is IMO better than that.

I'm happy with Sibley digging in like that. We have a wealth of stroke players in the middle order who can play strokes at the other end without worry they might cause a collapse.

Exactly Lefty. That’s why England had such an effective batting unit when we had Cook (and Trott) doing that job at one end and tiring the bowlers out, which enabled the likes of Pietersen, Flintoff, Prior and others down the order to come in and express themselves.

And recently we haven't had openers who could dig in, exposing Root too early.

There aren't many openers who can play dogged for 25 overs and then explode thereafter. Gooch stands out in that respect, maybe Vaughan too for a few years.
