The closest as a leader would be Stokes buts he's got enough going on as a alrounder and 'talisman' (also personal issues). The vice skipper is Ali who is a bit part player these days.

The issue with England isn't the skipper. Its that we have 3-5 batsman who are bang out of nick. Then throw in the fact we are without Stokes/Archer /Wood / Butler / Broad etc. That said only Stokes improves the batting.

Oh and we don't have a spinner since Swann who can hold up and end and not only take wickets but keep the run rate down.

I agree about Root. Just simply nobody better and he's constantly let down by the batters. You can't knock the bowling attack despite all the injuries.

We simply never get 350+ runs 😕
 
Spinner are key as well Ali isn't good enough. Yes he seems to get kohli but gave away a lot of runs.
 
Englands middle order is a mess.

Ali got dropped a couple of years ago for good reason. For someone who used to open the batting, his batting has been terrible. Bowling average.

Bairstow & Butler too inconsistant.

England 2 openers are no better. Both have been OK, but certainly don't inspire a huge amount of cofidence.

Root is such a great batsman, but we are missing Stokes.

Bowling - I like Robinson's performances. He has been the find of the summer. We are missing Wood & Archer badly.
 
There’s a fair few quality players missing at the moment. Stokes, Buttler, Broad, Archer, Wood. The issue still remains with the batting, and that’s what needs solving.
 
I think if we had either archer or wood for this test the outcome would of been different, Bumrah found extra bounce with his pace. Their tail wagged against our medium pacers. We will be in big trouble at ashes if wood is not fit / gets injured.

We need a Spinner too, Ali has got to be dropped,their 2nd innings he was woeful and root didn't trust him in their first. His batting performance was dreadful as well. He doesn't play with the same attacking style he did years back.
Is it time for Parkinson? Don't rate Bess, leach or Ali. Surely Parkinson is worth a stab now.

It's such a shame Adil Rashid doesn't fancy test cricket. He'd walk into this test side.

White balls finished. I'd be on the phone to get him in for 5 days work of graft 👍

leach should be playing every game as our spin option.

why has it taken 4 games to get woakes in when he’s the best allrounder in English conditions

Fully agree about Butler. Then again he's probably meant to come in with 300+ on the board and take the game away.

He's always coming in at 150-6

Also if it's purley down to wicket keeping ability Ben Foakes is the best glove man by a country mile. He is a stumping machine.

Silverwood said in his interview that Mark Wood would not have made a difference to the outcome. Just cant see how he has come to that conclusion, 90mph+ bowlers make a difference in all conditions.

Woakes has been injured and played his first game (2nd xi county game) the week before being recalled.
 
Is Foakes still out injured, I assume he is as surely he would have come in for Buttler for this test if he was fit???

Yes Foakes still out. He tore his hamstring slipping on a sock on the changing room floor.....couldn't write it😂

I think the issue they have with him when fit is that he 'can't bat'. Yet he has a couple of test hundreds. Absolutely hands down the best wicket keeper in the country.

Adam Gilchrist has a lot to answer for.....since he arrived on the scene wicket keepers have to be able to bat lol.

Once India scored big we probably all knew what was on the cards. An England batting collapse and defeat.
