John Lennon and Almeria

Well known in the province.

I have had my photo taken with the statue.

Updated: Whoops. I wrote this without reading the article. So lots of duplicate references here.

It is not far from the main entrance of the Refugios. A set of tunnels under the city of Almería. They we're built to provide safety from the bombing from Hitler's planes during the civil war. Franco invited him to send planes to bomb Spain as a practice for World War 2.

As well as bombing Almería they also bombed people fleeing Málaga on foot. When Málaga was falling to Franco people walked from Málaga to Almería.

The missus won a free meal at a restaurant in Almería as a nearest the pin golf prize recently. So we are going to spend a night in a hotel there tomorrow. Close to the cathedral and the alcazaba.

We are booked to view the latest tourist attraction, the Cable Inglés. It was used to deliver iron ore by train from the mines inland. It has been refurbished and is now open as a tourist attraction. You can walk along the top of it. To where the ore was dumped directly from trains into the ships.

You can get flights to Almería Airport direct from the UK. With a better selection available during the summer timetable.

From 2026 onwards you should be able to use a fast train service to Almería from Europe. The trains will come down the east coast of Spain. Then along the south coast from Murcia. That is also a nice province to visit.

Also, this corner of Spain is the driest part. So good for winter breaks. However, watch out as the bad weather here tends to be windy weather. Good for windsurfers.

Here ends the tourism advert for the area.

Back home now after our night in Almería city. Took yet another photo of the John Lennon statue.

Had some very nice drinks and tapas. 3 small beers plus a bottle of lager cost 12.50 euros. Some of the tapas was free. Or you could pay a little extra for some posher tapas that was on the menu. All of the items were named after famous females. https://braserialaconsentida.es/carta/. We had a Frida Kahlo, Jennifer Lopez, Laura Pausini and an Audrey Hepburn (pork burger).

Really enjoyed our stroll along El Cable Inglés. I can recommend it to anyone who goes to Almería. Here is where you can book a free visit. https://apalmeria.com/puerto-ciudad/cable-ingles/

You can switch the language to English on the site.

Interesting, might pay a visit sometime. Surprised there's no statue of Lennon and Yoko in Gibraltar where they got married, the only souvenir I could find was a commemorative stamp with them on it

I've got a place in the Murcia province, lovely area and great beaches but like you say very dry in the summer and it does get windy. In the recent years we have had a lot of rain which also brings lots of red dust which is a b***r to clean off the car and house.

We used to play golf at La Manga a lot in the late 90s and early 2000s. Been to other places in Murcia province from time to time as well. We thought about buying there or Almería province.

I think the dust is called calima. We have had it as well. It has even fallen on the skiing part of the Sierra Nevada mountains that are are around 2 hours away from us towards Granada.

It was strange watching videos of people skiing on red snow.

We go to La Manga a bit, it's nice but couldnt live in La Manga.

Yes the dust is called calima from the Sahara I believe.

We have been in Spain 7 years now and love it, hopefully I'll get to retire over there in the next 10 years.

Never been to Almeria but it looks beautiful, will have to put it on the list of places to visit.

Agree with you about La Manga. Went there for golf and nothing else.

Like a lot of cities there are quite a lot of shops, bars and restaurants closed down in Almería. Nevertheless it is still well worth a visit.
