Jones - new 3 year contract

What if Hackney gave us one more year last summer? šŸ‘€
I'd ask what the point was in signing a new 3 year contract at the beginning of the season in that case. He was already under contract for two years so had no need to extend if he considered leaving this summer. He's only leaving if there is an offer we can't refuse.

I would be confident that contract is worth a higher salary than the previous one. It also helps secure a fair transfer fee for Boro. It's mutually beneficial even if an agreement is in place...

of course it would, but there was no need to extend the length either if he had already decided he was going to leave. He will be here unless there is a massive offer that the club feel they cannot turn down. It would need to be a club record sale even before significant add ons. We have FFP room, we have relatively little debt now, we have finances under control, and he's a key first team member on a long contract, we hold the cards. I'm sure some clubs will test us, and I'm sure we will have told him we will listen to fair offers in 12 months. Same with Rav as well, signed a new extended contract.

You can never say never in football, but you can mitigate the risks by lengthening the contract and putting the decision in the clubs hands, not the players (see Akpom).

I donā€™t think he has the attributes to play as a ā€œcutting insideā€ wingerā€¦ he isnā€™t a great crosser of the ball from deep, doesnā€™t really shoot much and canā€™t really pick a through ball / clever pass.

His attributes are much better suited to playing as a traditional old school wingerā€¦ using his pace to beat the full back on the outside, get to the byline for a pull back / low cross
I get what you say in terms of his ability to strike a ball but he showed in the Fulham game that he doesn't need to cut in (it's not like his delivery is good from the right) but also he does regularly come inside from the right so I'm not that sure that stands up. He's quite unconventional our Issey. That's what I like about him.

It was Hackney's first season, at a decent level. The year before he was at Scunthorpe & not sure if he was a regular. I hardly think he was impatient last summer to move on. This year he has struggled with injury, I doubt he would want away, unless we get a Ā£20-25m offer which would be too good to turn down,

He hadn't decided he was going to leave. He was going to give the Boro another year to try and get promoted. Had we achieved that promotion then he would be more inclined to stay. I don't know the ins and outs of that contract but it without doubt will have been an increase in weekly salary. Potentially other promotion based incentives to try and incentivise his additional year. Providing Hackney trusts Boro will stick to their word regarding allowing him to leave, there's no reason for him not to take an improved contract. Who knows, he may have got some sort of release clause put into his contract.

The fact we've gone backwards instead of forwards isn't going to instill confidence that a bigger push is on next season. It's a short career and if there are PL opportunities there he'd be daft not to take them. Extending the contract ensures Boro can demand a decent fee it doesn't mean they should refuse to sell outright.

He wasn't impatient. That's why he's still here. There was interest last summer. He's given us another season. Why wouldn't he want away because he's been injured this season? He's still a year older and another year into his career? I think we'll accept Ā£17-20m

It's a similar situation to the Rogers one. Not sure why people expect a different result?

I do think weā€™re getting to the stage now where weā€™ve been slowly moving pieces into place for a big push.

Weā€™ve reduced the wage bill and overall age of the squad. We have a manager who is invested in the future building of the club as well as the here and now.

Paddy will be the last of our really big earners to probably leave this summer.

We have a decent nucleus of a squad - a lot of which will hopefully be returning fully fit for next season. Some of which will hopefully improve and kick on again next year - certain the younger more unproven signings.

Itā€™d seem stupid of the club to now have a massive summer clearance of our best players (even if it does earn us a good few quid) to then have to rebuild again. Itā€™ll put us back at least a season.

I would hope we tie McGree down, manage to keep Hackney and look to add some more quality in the summer, particularly a longer term replacement for Howson who likely agree a new one year deal. Then look at bolstering our attacking options to add more quality and depth.

Everything Iā€™ve heard from Scott was that they werenā€™t looking to have a summer like the last one, which will hopefully indicate a summer based on quality not quantity of incomings.

Fingers crossed! šŸ¤žšŸ» šŸ¤£

Iā€™d love to believe this, but I genuinely think this summer is going to be another summer of upheaval.

Weā€™re going to lose Dijksteel, McNair, Ayling, Thomas, Oā€™Brien, Greenwood, McGree & Forss.

I think weā€™ll also see Hackney & Rav go if we get good offers in and I think Howson will depend on whether weā€™re going to sign a replacement. But assuming they donā€™t weā€™re left withā€¦

GK: Dieng, Glover, Brynn
LB: Bangura, Engel
RB: Smith
CB: Fry, Lenihan, RVDB, Clarke
CM: Barlaser, Azaz, Hackney
RW/LW: Jones, Silvera
CF: Latte Lath, Coburn

And of those, we know Engel, Smith, Barlaser, Silvera & Coburn arenā€™t good enough for a side challenging for promotion.

Itā€™s another season of big incomings needed.

Fair enough opinion.

I personally donā€™t see us losing McGree and Forss, unless either forces a move / doesnā€™t extend their contract. Wouldnā€™t be surprised if we try to keep Ayling who is out of contract.

Thomas also out of contract but heā€™s not done enough for me. Oā€™Brien Iā€™m on the fence with to be honest. We may be priced out of a permanent deal anyway.

Of those who arenā€™t good enough, I think is debatable. My opinions probably differ on some of them. Itā€™s all guesswork though. I donā€™t think the club are planning for a summer like the last one but weā€™ll have to wait and see.

There were rumours McGree wanted out in the summer and they havenā€™t really gone away. Iā€™d love to see him sign a new contract, but realistically if he wants to keep himself in the international picture heā€™s probably going to be want to be playing in one of the top leagues. I could see him going to the Bundesliga. If he doesnā€™t sign a contract extension in the next few months, the club will cash in.

I think the club has to plan for this possibility. Essentially, weā€™re in the same position we were in end of last season. Weā€™ve been propped up by loans again, theyā€™re just not of the same quality.

I can see us offering Ayling a contract, but other than that I canā€™t see any of the others returning. Nobody has really set the place alight.

Thereā€™s a very real possibility we start the season with this:

Dieng

Ayling Rav Fry Engel

Hackney Howson

Jones Azaz Silvera

Latte Lath

But heā€™s still here. If he wanted out and 12 momths later heā€™s still here then he isnā€™t very good at forcing a move

Last season was it 6 or 7 loanees we had and no chance of really keeping any without going up.

This season we could resign Thomas, Ayling and greenwood for a combined 1.5m if we wanted to. Oā€™Brien is the only loanee who will demand a decent fee but then itā€™ll likely only be about 3m. If we truly want him we could get him.

The reality is only Ayling has done enough to prove his worth and he would be free. We have had the squad bulked by loanees rather than first team regulars, thatā€™s a much better position than last year. Even if we didnā€™t sign any of them, when all our players are fit we will be in a similar position to the beginning of the season, not worse. Like last year.

Surely if fit Lenihan and Clarke will both be ahead of Fry in the pecking order.
