Kai Havertz - What do you reckon then...

Firstly - I don't think he is worth the reported £65 million after his 2 or 3 years at Chelsea.

However, I also don't think he is a lost cause.

Chelsea could suck the life out of anybody and there is undoubted talent hidden away somewhere in Havertz.

If Arsenal, well Arteta, can get him playing to something similar to the same level of the exciting teenager at Leverkusen then it might be a shrewd bit of business.

I still have no idea what position he is, and regardless of him recapturing form/ fulfilling potential, I definitely dont think the lad is an out and out goal scorer regardless of the team he is in.

Not sure on this one. I wouldn't write him off based on his time at Chelsea, they are a basket case, but I've never seen him really do anything that makes me think there is something there (for Chelsea or Germany). If they are signing him to play as a striker I think it's doomed to fail. If he's going to be playing deeper then maybe.

Seems a very expensive gamble.

Definitely an expensive gamble.

I think its where Arsenal find themselves in the transfer market, they need to be a bit more creative/ think outside of the box for game changers in order to avoid Man City/ Barca/ Real steam rolling through a potential deal.

A lesser example would be Odegaard, when Arsenal took him on loan the hype of the world class kid had died down, and he had been through some pretty uneventful loan spells. Arsenal took a punt and he is now one of the top PL players.

I'd imagine they are hoping for a similar effect on this one.

£40/£50 Million is becoming the norm for an experienced good player who will not really make a complete difference to your team’s performance, just to show an improvement in his position in your club.
Perhaps this shows the value of Michael Carrick because it is already being suggested that all Havertz needs is a change of positon, from 9 to 8, just part of our manager’s handling of Chubba.

Yep, value of players is just nuts now.

I seen yesterday that the Bristol lad (Alex Scott) is getting quoted at 25-30 million, and this is someone who has only had 2 full seasons at Championship level.

(Albeit you are paying premium for 'potential' with him - only 20 I think)

Alex Scott was my first ever Notebook entry on here as a complete unknown.....

65 million isn't shrewd in anyone's language.

"it might be"

Shrewd doesn't have to equal cheap.

All depends how he fares.

If he has a meaningful contribution to a Premier League win etc then 65 million in todays market (or roughly just north of 4no. Assombalongas) is a good price, and would certainly qualify as 'shrewd' (...to show good judgement) on a player once valued at 100 million, and not fancied by most anymore.

Deffo a top level quality player in there, but one of those players that needs a very specific structure and tactics to bring the very best out of him. I think Arsenal would suit him more than Chelsea. I think he would do really really well up the road, he would suit Eddie Howe's style, IF he managed he hardwork out of possession.

£65 million for a German international is about going rate these days.

It is an unusual one though. Where does he play as the time at Chelsea shows his game isn't playing with his back to goal as a central forward.

Its a strange one when Mount is getting touted at lesser value, who has been more productive for Chelsea in terms of goals and assists.

Similar age, similar position (ish) and not a million miles apart in appearances for Chelsea.

It's a good point regarding Mount. I suppose the main difference is Mount only has one year left on this contract. I'm surprised Pochenttio hasn't made it clear he wants to keep Mount though. His game is ideal for the way Pochenttio has his teams play. Mount want a new challenge of course.

To be fair I completely forgot about Mounts contract situation - so does go some way to explain.

There are more of the bigger names going out of the door during this Chelsea clearout than I expected. I assumed it would be the likes of Loftus-Cheek, Ziyech, Borja, not Havertz, Kante and Mount.

Seems like a lot of money.

Where is he going to play, and in place of who?

Where does this guy fit into a 4-3-3?

Arsenal scored 88 goals last year, and I don't think this guy is the answer to scoring more, unless they change the formation, but that's worked for them extremely well.

My thoughts exactly - but Arteta has obviously thought this through ha!

You get the impression there will be an overhaul in midfield for Arsenal, Xhaka, Partey all out, so perhaps there will be a new role for Havertz, deeper than we have seen, sitting in with Odegaard, ....Rice holding it together behind - perhaps.

I think he's a quality player if I'm honest, just not in the lone number 9 role he's been shoved into at Chelsea

If he's playing as the most advanced midfielder in a 4-3-3 for a possession based team I think we'll see his quality the most, got to remember he's still only 24 and he won Chelsea their UCL in the final

26 G+A in 37 games for Germany too
