Labour withdraws its support for Rochdale by-election candidate Aszhar Ali

A needless own goal.

He should have been suspended immediately for peddling *****.

They've instead chosen the worst of both worlds.
Tried to publicly back him and then caved in to pressure.

They can't take him off the ballot paper it's against the law unfortunately.
He's been suspended from the party.
If he does win he'll have the whip withdrawn and will not be the candidate at the GE.
No doubt some will falsely claim that he wasn't who the CLP wanted and was foisted on them by the party.

They could have suspended him immediately, instead of accepting his apology and backing him first.

Britain's house-trained socialists - the lowest form of hypocrite. #Easterhouse #nineteensixtynine
The workers need their own party. It's that simple. The Labour Party has Fifth Columnists running through it like a stick of Blackpool rock. The class struggle is international and it needs an alliance of like-minded activists across the planet to take the fight to the extreme right wing zealots.

Thought this would have more traction as seen a lot of politics discussed on here. You know it’s bad when the defence is “fell for a conspiracy online”.. up there with most pathetic defences

Would have been a feeding frenzy had it been a Tory candidate. 😏

The current choice on the ballot for the folk of Rochdale is probably Karma for re electing Cyril Smith for all those years.

2 disgraced ex Labour MP’s and now this conspiracist lump.

Poor Tony Lloyd looks like the aberration.

The current Labour decision maiming and PR machine is the footballing equivalent of us consistently playing out from the back.

More evidence (as if we needed it) that Labour's disciplinary system isn't independent at all.

Martin Forde, the KC who led a report into Labour which concluded that a culture of factionalism led to a situation where allegations of racism and harassment weren’t being addressed, has spoken though.

He said:

If you want a fair and transparent system then it has to deal with people consistently, and I’m aware from discussions with some of the MPs within the party – who might be described as left-leaning – that they feel that when it comes to disciplinary action taken against them then things move rather slowly, but if you’re in the right faction of the party, as it were, then things are dealt with either more leniently or more swiftly.
Now that’s the perception, I can’t quantify it, but I do think it’s something that leadership should be concerned to, in a away, dilute, or if it is in fact the case, they need to give reassurance to members of the voting public and to their members that people will be treated fairly.
He said Labour MPs Kate Osamor and Diane Abbott both apologised immediately after they were accused of antisemitism, but “things seemed to drag on in terms of disciplining certain elements of the party, and be dealt with swiftly in others”.

I don’t think the first ‘leak’ was racist. He was commenting about Israel.
The rest of the narrative (helpfully supplied by the Mail) could be construed as religious bigotry.
I wasn't aware of the added context, but having read it it's still unclear whether what he said constituted racism or bigotry. It seems he criticises sections of the Jewish/Israeli press but if for instance his comments were directed at the Jewish Chronicle then they may have been justified. That publication has been caught lying and breaching the journalistic code on several occasions evidenced by the number of court cases they have lost.

What Aszhar Ali initially said was certainly not antisemitic.
