Least favourite Cities in the UK

A lot of cities just need a bit of investment. As I said on anther thread, I live in Liverpool. The city centre area has improved massively since it got EU funding and European Capital of Culture funding back in 2008 or whenever it was.

Glasgow was great to visit and similarly they got funding to improve the place due to the Commonwealth games.

There are a lot of deprived UK provincial cities that have been ignored and are in need of a boost of investment to get them tidied up and moving in the right direction. For all its faults, there used to be EU funding for this sort of thing, but clearly that has now changed. Whereas the UK government remain south east focused.

Grimsby at the moment is looking grim. Lots of shops closed down, they're putting a new cinema in at the end of the shopping centre but I don't think that will fix it.

I'd say Luton or any of the towns in the M25 area eg Watford, Slough, Staines etc that have been absorbed into a bleak, never-ending conurbation of suburban housing, light industrial units & warehouses

There's loads of lovely towns in "the M25 area" hence why it's one of most expensive areas in the country, as well as its proximity to London.

As others have said, most of us are from Middlesbrough and so slagging off other towns is a bit rich, especially when we get so precious when any outsiders does it to us "proximity to the North Yorkshire moors, seaside etc etc".....

Anyone saying London, Manchester or even Leeds are mental.
London is such a dirty city, massively overcrowded and full of crime. Clearly this is typical for most big cities but it must be an place to live unless you have millions

Manchester and Leeds are so run down 5 minutes from the city centre. They aren’t the worst in the uk but definitely don’t have much going for them

"full of crime"

Have you looked at the stats for Middlesbrough lately ?

I detest packed/busy cities as they tend to be full of very ignorant and rude individuals and I have found London to have more of these than anywhere else in the country.

It is also the busiest city in the UK which I am not a fan of. I understand why it is, but that doesn't change the fact I don't enjoy it.

The only time I go to London is for the football because I try to avoid it like the plague. It is also a dirty place. In fact very dirty in many parts.

It is also the city I feel the most unsafe in.

I would say that last bit is a feeling based on either prejudice or listening to the right wing media lie about "no go zones".

I get people don't like big cities but it's certainly not dirtier than many other British city. Not sure how you mean its dirty.

There are more rude people in London yes. But that's simple maths based on population size. There are also more friendly people. More crazy people, more lovable people...

Conclusion is: you don't like big cities. Which is valid. But have singled put London simply becasue it's bigger. Which seems unfair.

Nope.

You're correct in the fact I don't like big cities in the UK. However, I actually like big cities in Europe.

But I do feel more unsafe in London than any other city in UK. That's nothing to do with the media. That's based on my own experience, especially on the underground.

What, out of curiosity, drives your difference of opinion between big European cites and big UK cities? Sorry you feel unsafe on the underground. Could it be an experience thing? I've been riding the underground for years and just don't think about it now. And unlike Rome or Barcelona no one has tried to mug me or my family in London

It is probably a mental block in all honestly.

I am much more comfortable when I'm abroad, than in the UK, in big cities. I have found the public and workers in European cities much more friendlier, warming and opening than those in London.

Could it be an experience thing?
Yes. Not what's happened to me personally, but what I've personally witnessed in front of my own eyes riding the underground.

Leicester, (or "LEST-OR"!, as it called by it's natives) mainly because I had a nightmare 6 months living and working there in the late 90's!
