Leicester crowd ?

I think the stadium is the right size for us. If we go up this season we will sell out against the top teams, and have crowds of 30k or just under against the other clubs.

Things change quickly in football, and if things aren't going so well for us in a few years time the attendances could easily drop down to the 20k mark again.
We could do a Leeds/Sunderland/Cardiff and leave a new upper tier on the east closed when not in the prem!

Something to think about possibly but I struggle to believe we could average close to 40k over a large period of time in the Premier League, unless we were able to establish ourselves as a top half team.

I don't see any real benefit in expanding our stadium.

We sell out once or twice a season at the current capacity, and the only way that we'd need it to be larger was if there was a prolonged period in the Premier League or the club copied Sunderland and gave away thousands of tickets every week.

It would cost tens of millions to expand, and if we were in the second division then that extra capacity would very rarely be used.

It's not like we're in the situation of a Luton or Bournemouth, where their stadium is far too small for their potential crowds.

Any money going towards the stadium should be used on renovation and improvements.

We have never had an average attendance that high, and never will, as a community club shouldn't Boro be looking to cater for bigger demand when the need arises?

Ayresome, as we know, was built to cater for over 53,000 and whilst rarely filled it did attract crowds of over 40,000 regularly to create an average gate in the high 30ks.

Ground's the right size as it is....we won't be selling out against Brentford, Bournemouth, Palace and Fulham even if we do go up!

Attendances tend to rise as the National team does well. Also I believe the population of Teesside and environs must be greater than it was in the 50s?

It would be good to have some spare capacity rather than turn away punters. I believe that it is possible to extend the "horseshoe" upwards? I seem to remember this was designed in when the ground was built? Might we (for example) enlarge the South Stand to give a large "Kop" and move the away supporters wholly into the East as a temporary measure. Not been to a gig at the RS, which end does the stage go?

At the river end facing the south stand.

FWIW, I don't see us increasing the capacity of the stadium anytime soon. The club doesn't seem to have that kind of ambition and i don't think it's necessary either.

I think its unlikely too.

But that might add to the calculations in perhaps enlarging the South Stand.

Just some idle speculation here. I think the stadium could do with a refresh and it lacks some features now found in the latest stadium builds. Rebuild and enlarge the south end and include a "social club" with maybe a music venue and tap room?

Yes it did have an outline plan to add a tier on to the East bringing capacity to 42k(more likely 39k or so with current configurations). Probably never happen and not really required. I would however like to see better utilisation of the existing 33,981 seats.

Some interesting posts on here about the stadium capacity.

I remember when the plans for the Riverside first emerged and a bumper attendance at Ayresome Park in those days would be 18,000.

Plenty at the time said the 30,000 capacity Riverside would never be built and would be far too big anyway.

I was once in the camp of keeping demand high by limiting the capacity but I’ve changed my mind in the last few years, our fan base seems to have increased dramatically in the last 25 or so years.

One word Ambition (Steve Gibson's)

Other directors wanted to stay at a 20k all seater Ayresome Park
