Lens in for Chuba?

Sell and get Archer in with the money asap.
Would love to get him but feel he’ll just be too expensive. I’d think we would want two players at least with the Akpom cash which probably makes the upper limit about 8 or 9m for a single player (assuming we get 12ish for Akpom)

If Villa are wanting a buyback clause on Archer, that would put off a lot of PL interest I’d suggest and possibly reduce his value. I do not like such contracts, but if it works financially, do it and worry about the consequences if it happens. We would not lose financially, it would be like a free loan, barring wages. If we don’t go up we have the player and Villa unlikely to invoke clause. If we go up, they would want to see how he faired in that first season and if he fired the goals to keep us up and they bought him back, then we’d still be in a better position than now. A buy back clause could work in our favour on this (clutching at straws, but I wont let go till its out of sight).

I think he'll go, but nothing i've seen so far in the media has come across as anything else but vague speculation and guesswork. I don't think anything is imminent, but i may be wrong

If he wants to sign he will the fa t he hasn’t says it all.

But I’m surprised a player that has spent his entire career as a nomadic wannabe is now prepared to gamble it all and walk away after last season from a team that he’s finally settled into.

Ah well I think he’ll regret. It.

Not sure he is gambling anything when he will probably double his salary. We can't afford what he's now worth and that's fine, that's how football works.

I think us fans seem to forget it's just a job at the end of the day and players have to do what's best for them. Let's not forget we tossed him to the side as well when we deemed him to be *****. He can still love the club but have to do what is best for his career, if Ajax come calling or Lens who are in the Champions League it's a no brainer.

I’m August 2022 the majority of us would have driven Akpom to any club that would have given us £500k.
He has had one good season and to be fair went missing at the end of last year which resulted in us losing momentum.
Take the money and move on. Believe £8m is cheap but surely £12m plus is a bonus.
At the end of the day it is a similar story to DJed Spence. One good season doesn’t make them irreplaceable

I don't blame Chuba - a year ago he was being left to train with the u23 team until he played himself back into contention.

He could have a career threatening injury next week - he should fully explore his options.

Same with the team - a player with one year left not sure to re-sign. You either get an extension or sell to the best offer in my opinion.

I don't think it is as easy as saying - don't sell for anything less than 15m.

Whilst I’m gutted, not massively and surprised, no.

Football is mainly about money, loyalty is rare to non existent. Although when you reflect on how the club treated Chuba last season, who can really blame him, we were all disloyal to him in truth, well nearly all.

It is possible the club and Chuba agreed a scenario that he would make all the right noises while recovering from injury and Boro would sell to someone meeting their valuation to enable us to do our deals to cover several bases. Chuba has not said a bad word and he now has (maybe) a chance to play Champions League with a top club and get a big salary for him and his family. Most fans last season were not showing Chuba a lot of love and nobody, not even Chuba would have seen him scoring 28 League goals. He is worth about £17M presently, his value may go either way by next summer. £12M would see a decent transfer profit and enable new incomings to fit our model. Gilbert and Rogers are his replacements I think, we all need to move forward somehow.

His injury has probably slowed down any deal, hopefully we can say our goodbyes on good terms and he and Boro look back on what we each did for the other party with fondness.

I wonder if comments on this thread reflect the two negotiating positions on the contract renewal.

The club offering a contract more reflective of a player who has only had one prolific goalscoring season. Probably a generous offer in their eyes, but wary of falling into the Assombalonga/Gestede trap again.

And a player looking for a contract that maybe is just about affordable for a top championship side, but one that is reflective of being championship top scorer and player of the season.

I have little doubt Chuba loves it here and all things being equal would stay. But it's a short career and he'll likely never be in as strong a position to negotiate a contract again.

As much as he might well regret it on the footballing side of things, he has to balance that with the fact he could pick up a career threatening injury next week. If he knows he can earn a lot more elsewhere than what the club are willing to pay, it's hard to blame him. I assume we're quite far apart.

Another one feigning love for the badge. Mercenary who quickly forgot what Carrick did for him to get his career back on track. No interest in what he does next - move on

Mercenary?

**** off.

He'd been treated like total **** for most of his time here, and has behaved with total professionalism and class the entire way.

He owes the club absolutely nothing, and he'll be bringing in an 8 figure fee for his efforts last season.
