Littering - What is it about bottles/cans/coffee cups

that makes people so reluctant to keep them in their cars till they can get to a bin? It's so disheartening that almost everywhere you drive, especially out in the country around our numerous wonderful beauty spots, what catches your eye is almost a trail of energy drink cans, Lucozade bottles, disposable coffee/Maccies cups at the sides of the road.

It's such an abhorrent thing to do but is there anything that can be done about it? I can't think of a viable solution personally, I just wish people would cease being such utterly ignorant scummers. Really overheats my urine when I live in and respect this beautiful area and people think nothing of tarnishing it by making it their own personal rubbish tip. Sick of this chavvy, entitled culture we're forced to live in. As long as it doesn't affect them, they don't give a turd.

Absolutely I’m exactly the same . I’ve seen people doing it and not just kids and given them a hell of a stare ( couple of verbal challenges ) and they look back completely unbeknown to what my beef is . They really don’t see what’s wrong with it which is the the greater worry as they really can’t be ‘guided’ . Just an example of everything is somebody else’s problem........... ’ As long as I’m alright ‘

Comes down to selfishness.
Kids that do it, their parents probably also do it. Putting more bins about doesn’t seem to work as there’s always rubbish in the area around them.

There’s a lot of things over the last 9-10 months I’ve seen that has made me see fully how selfish a lot of people are. This is one of those things that is such a small thing, but really highlights it.

Whenever I see someone drop litter I make a point of simply saying, "Hi, I think you dropped something" - , or sometimes picking it up and handing it back to them saying "Is this yours, you dropped it over there"

Usually does the trick and they either pick it up or take it from me and keep hold of it. Have been told to eff off a few times also, but you win some, lose some.

All you have to do is go to a lot of kids football matches & see kids walking back to the cars after the game with their parents & just toss their empty drink bottles on the pitch, parents alongside, this is where the problem lies, kids just follow suit

Too many mouth breathing idiots use McDonald's drive through. I was able to witness this effect first hand when they opened a new one in Skelton. I go there every week day at some point and no sooner was that restaurant opened than the surrounding roads and verges began to fill up with big brown bags, polystyrene cups and food boxes. I sometimes see the Maccy D staff out cleaning up but the next day it's back to square one.

I’m certainly very unimpressed how many are out for themselves . The bog roll stampede was disgusting And made me want to go and live on a Scottish Isle ( but then I would of ironically annoyed the inhabitants by looking after myself ) 😢

I was in stationery traffic about a year ago and the mum chucked a maccies bag out of the drivers window and as we weren't moving I got out and picked it up to hand it back to be met with a tirade of abuse and in front of her 3 small children in the back seat, not belted in, just jumping around. She then chucked it out again which was a bit of a red rag to me, so I got out again and went to return her belongings but the traffic started to move away so I ended up having to do a half jog, half run and just managed to tuck it under the rear windscreen wiper. I'm sure I looked a bit of a t*t, but she had really pushed my button. Not something I have repeated because I'm sure law of averages states one day it will be a man mountain who'll not take kindly to my actions!

There was some sort of campaign to print stickers with car reg or something and stick it to the burger boxes and cups etc.

I hate littering! Such a lazy, ignorant, selfish act. I’d start by removing their little finger with snips and dropping it on the ground, see if they pick that up!

I once confronted a group of young lads who’d dropped a load of stuff, expected a load of mouth when I asked if they lived here and whether they wanted people from outside the area to respect their home town if they did? In fairness they seemed to take it on board and picked up and walked the 10-15 feet to the bin with it.

They definitely need to introduce something like that, it's f***ing disgusting, especially out in the country where it stands out a mile and could harm wildlife.

The one that gets me is the ‘eat it in the car in the car park then open the door and dump it all under the car then drive away’ one, as if no-one will notice. I’d confiscate and crush the fkin car!

sorry, I hate littering that much I’ve come back to this thread 6hrs later to get that off my chest.

see you again at 4am no doubt!!

I'm glad I'm not the only one 👍👍

Scum. Sub-human scum.

I think I told this story on the old board - in a retail park and I saw a young kid out with his mum, and as they were walking along he nonchalantly just dropped a sandwich wrapper or something.

I stopped them said 'Excuse me, you've dropped something', pointing at the wrapper nearby.

She looked at me, dumbfounded, and said 'Don't look at me - it was him!', pointing at her son before they both walked off. o_O:D

So they got in their car, me following with the wrapper, which I put under their windscreen wiper just as she turned on the engine and locked the doors.

Meanwhile in Germany - Ive seen police and other citizens remonstrate with litter louts and force them to use the bins!
Germany seems to be a far cleaner country than the UK.(y)
They dont like jay-walking either, as a group of us found out........

Hal drive during the kids football season is appauling

After the matches the parents clear their children's muddy boots on to the pavement around their cars then just drive off leaving all the path full of dirt for people to walk through, selfishness

Another reason Germany is ahead of us as a civilisation 👍👍

It's one of the first things you notice in Scandinavia too - no litter and no piles of dog egg everywhere. Civilised, respectful people.

It’s one of my biggest peeves. It honestly annoys me so much. If it’s not people throwing stuff out their car window it’s fly tipping. I think a lot of European countries are worse than use for graffiti but so much better than the UK in terms of litter. It’s never been as bad as it is now. If I go fishing on the beach I usually pick up a carrier bag of other peoples rubbish. They just need to actually start enforcing fines, unless it’s fly tipping no one gets punished.

The car window situation annoys me the most because they actually have ample space and compartments to store whatever rubbish they have till they find a bin/get home. An act of pure ignorance and selfishness, but then I'm getting more accustomed to those from people in this day and age, sadly. I didn't think much to people before covid, needless to say my opinion of them has plummeted even further since toilet roll wars and conspiracy theories etc. 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

Covid has in some cases highlighted the worst in us as a race of beings
