Lockdown Rules

Morning all, hope you can help by sharing your opinion on this please.

I haven't broken a single lockdown rule (as far as I'm aware). I have tried my utmost to follow the guidance and comply.

This weekend I would like to drive a distance of 3.5 miles to take a walk in a park (more for a change of scenery than anything else). I am getting a bit fed up of walking from the house.

When it boils down to it though, it is an unnecessary journey, and that makes me feel a little uncomfortable about doing it. Although the benefits are huge. Feeling normal, enjoying the walk and the fresh air, it means a lot to me. I cannot walk the distance to the park by the way, that would just be too much for me I'm afraid.

Thoughts, advice, opinions all welcome. Thanks

I'd agree with the poster above. 3.5 miles is definitely local, and providing you're not going to a park that is absolutely teeming with people and you keep your distance when walking, then driving from your house to a local park to walk outdoors to maintain your mental health and sanity offers an incredibly minimal (some might say zero) risk.

Go for it. It’s hardly driving across the country and since there is no definition of local, you aren’t breaking any rules either. The most important thing is you are using your common sense and you aren’t putting other people at risk. There’s no one size fits all rule, for me it’s better and safer to drive a few miles to walk in deserted woodland than walk in my local park that’s full of people. Don’t really get the extra risk to the nhs when thousands of people have accidents at home every year. I’ve never needed hospital treatment for any accident in nearly 40 years.

I think the fact it is 3.5 miles and its to an open area like a park then it's definitely fine. I would consider 3.5 miles local area. You're supposed to stay in your town, but most towns are wider than this. And it's safer to travel 3 miles outside of town to a less dense area than 3 miles into a town centre.

Absolutely fine, I’ve done similar. Boris drove further for his bike ride.

I’d say five miles is fine, more than seven or eight is stretching it, but that’s only the rule in my head, maybe anywhere in Teesside is local🤷‍♂️

You’re allowed to drive anywhere you want to view a property by the way 🙄

the "local area" question is such a grey area. just to show how silly it is i am from billingham and i know 2 people who have travelled from billingham to Seaton Carew (6.6 miles according to google maps) and one was fined and the other was warned by police. i know they are cracking down on seaside resorts etc but for me i have two young kids and the beach is the best place to take them as its wide open space. its not easy telling a 5 and 3 year old to keep distance from everyone walking around the streets!

I've started walking to local places via routes I don't normally take. Before I walk I don't feel inspired but I go down roads I never normally walk down, and little paths tucked away. Every time I notice something I didn't expect.. a fox the other day, and interesting architecture. Seems like I'm seeing things around here for the first time. I live in central Bristol.

Bristol is a historic and fascinating city, its harbours filled with statues...

Seriously if like me you live in the suburbs miles of 30s - 70s semis lose their fascination. Get yourself to that park lad. Stat.

Here in the sleepy East Riding, the police have a different opinion. One of my neighbours was stopped at 7 am had his number plate recorded and warned not to repeat the breach of regulations or face a £200 fine. Apologies, Heine - not what you wanted to hear. And like the rest of posters, I think it is ridiculous.
