London hotels

Going to London with the wife to do some Christmas shopping at the start of December. Can anyone recommend somewhere nice (but reasonable) to stay? Just some shopping during the day and out for a meal and drinks on the night.

If you can’t find it, I’d recommend a travelodge or premier inn in the outer boundaries…Beckton, Wimbledon barking or somewhere like that as long as they’re on the tube or DLR lines..

As I mentioned on the last thread, London prices are really high at the moment (I would suggest unreasonably high) and vary significantly day to day. Also if you post your dates on here, I (and likely others) can give you some suggestions. If you can be flexible, Sunday and Monday nights will likely be cheapest by far.

If you're only bothered about shopping and maybe lunch during the day and then something different on a night I'd recommend stopping in St Albans. Nice place and about 30 mins on the train into Central London. It's just off the side of the M1 and parking is reasonable there even if your hotel doesn't have parking.

We stayed in Greenwich Premier Inn last time we were down. It is the same as every other Premier Inn, but price was a bit cheaper and 5 mins walk away from DLR, or 10/15 mins walk from Cutty Sark and a river station, where you can get to other parts of London by Ferry, which is a bit different.

Park Plaza Westminster - great hotel and location. It might be a bit late now though.

Flat iron is worth a visit too if you like steak.

White House Hotel in Albany St NW1.

Close to Kings Cross. Five minutes walk to Oxford Circus. 10 minutes walk to Marylebone restaurants. Gt Portland St tube is close and you can walk in Regents Park after breakfast if the weather is ok. Easy to get to Camden markets too.

Queen & Artichoke pub next door is a good boozer.

I know you said reasonable, but if you fancied a Christmas treat for you and your wife, have a look at this. I’ve stayed here twice this year with work, views are stunning, 10 mins walk to Tower Hill tube and a ‘spoons’ just a bit further along.
You only live once …….

I always use Brentford Premier inn.
Booked up for Millwall. It only £170 for 4 nights in January.
Always the cheapest around.
28 minute train Waterloo to Brentford and then only half mile walk
Or Picadilly line to South Ealing and 20 min walk or short bus trip.
Only if your on a budget like me though.
Central London in December is at least £200 a night for average hotel

We prefer to stay in Greenwich when we go to London. It’s a lovely area and away from the hassle and bustle! We have booked a few places round there on Laterooms.

Was here the other day. Brilliant option. 👍

1km exactly from Greenwich Park gates, said my watch.

Stayed there for the Leicester League Cup Final weekend. St Katherine's Dock right next door, easy access to town, crackin hotel.

I live close by. If you are a regular visitor and you haven't come across it yet try:

Plume of Feathers

.... next to the park entrance on the far side of the museum ...

Now noted for its Sunday roast. That's getting a bit busy - you need to book. If you want to avoid that, still a nice regular pub with good food.

Also a bit hidden, but can be a good music venue. Great pizzas and good beer!

Pelton Arms

I have never stayed, but the Pelton also does b+b ....

There's a newish Premier Inn right next to Wembley Stadium which I stayed at with the family in the run up to Christmas the year before lockdown and we thought it was a good option. Walking distance to the Tube and the Wembley area itself was quite vibrant on an evening so heading back to the hotel after a day in the centre to get changed and then eating near the hotel worked well (there are various options, although mainly TGI Friday/Nandos type places).

It was also surprisingly cheap, although I suspect they may have lowered the prices at the time to get people to try it as it had just opened (there's another Premier Inn near Wembley that was more expensive).
