Maddo constantly criticising Engel

Engel is pretty average at everything. The only thing he has i like is effort. He can defend and puts a foot in when needed. But hes not a good defender one on one vs nippy wingers. Though i thougglht yesterday was about as good as hes been. Their riggt winger was really good. He did well. Makecno mistake giles would have been rinsed all game against him. You dont want giles in tje team wuen you are up against it. Hes a terrible defender. Bangura is better than both better defender and better physically. Id be happy for engel to be his backup. No point signing more left backs when we have two recent signings on the books.
 
You have to judge each player on the EPL are they good enough to take the step up or just good enough for this league also the coach they are trained by Carrick is trying to make him something he is not under a new manager playing him in a different position we might see a different player.
 
If we have to judge every player on EPL we might have to start again as very few of current squad would be good enough for that league.

Ive been saying for ages our left side is league one standard, its usually greenwood infront of engel. Do we count the left central midfielder in that to?
I personally dont think engel us quick enough in thought, hes not brave enough going forwards either. Often makes bad decisions. Same for greenwood, when they are paired together its horrible. Engel might be better with better options round him. Hes does have good attributes though. Like the track back and block yesterday. Hes a trier with a good attitude, but a frustrating player to watch especially in home games.

Dear me. Engel is not average at everything. He is in the top 80 percentile in the championship for a lot of defensive stats and much higher in plenty of attacking stats. To be clear average would be 50 percentile. So let's look at some of his season long stats as fullback percentiles.

Tackles won 80%
Duels won. 73%
Duels won as % 70%
Arial duels won. 75%
Aerial duals as % 73%
Interceptions 94%


He is below average on the following defensive stats:

Dribbled past
Tackles won as %

His attacking stats are even more impressive. Here is just 3:
Long ball accuracy 91%
Chances created 83%
Assists 88%

He isn't average at everything he does. He is very good at lots of stuff and very poor on 1 on 1.

You are never going to have 11 players all ready to play in the EPL in the championship. I think if you go up with 7 players capable of being PL starters, you're doing well.
I'm fairly happy with our LB options. I think we have several other areas I would prioritize for improvement before that.
 
We had the ipswich commentary not half as good as the boro one, they kept asking 'will' for his thoughts i think it was a young lad but could have been a woman.
What they thought was it was only a matter of time before they would run out easy winners, HA!

When people describe Engel as average, they mean he’s not a stand out left back in the league. It’s not based on his first few games. It’s based on watching him play a full season.

You need to understand that those percentiles include 2nd, 3rd and even 4th choice players in some cases including at our club. It’s not good enough to be at the 70th-75th percentile in stats relevant to his position if we want to challenge for promotion.

So who would you rate as the top 3 or 4 fullbacks in the division and we can do a compare?
 
Lets compare to lief davies, Ipswich left back. I have no idea what we will see but lets compare. I am assuming you would rate davies as one of the best in the league @SilentProf?

Engel:
Tackles won 80%
Duels won. 73%

Duels won 82%

Not too much in it. It's almost as if Engel isn't average at all, even including 3rd and 4th choices, who btw, seldom play.

if you think I was picking a weak fullback, I could have picked Tuanzebe or clarke both from a team sitting top of the table who have stats below Engels.

I can't understand why people want to believe their own opinion over facts and figures.
 
Engel is poor. He's bad positionally. His touch and general footballing technique is awful. He tries hard but he's not good enough.

I'm confident we'll bring in a new left back in the summer.

I think both left backs (Engel and Thomas) have benefitted from O'Brien and Clarke playing. Having 2 left footers in those positions and both players have helped cover that left back position.

Despite the statistics saying otherwise BG. Engels long range passing is very good, you don't do that if your technique is awful. He is in the 93rd percentile for succesful long passes.

They may have benefitted from Clarke playing, not so much Silvera and Greenwood though!

He does have some weaknesses, his technique isn't one of his weaknessess.

Great posts. I was saying the same things earlier. I think Engel is one of our better players.

Some of our fans replying seem to think exciting players are good players, and if they're not exciting, they're not very good...

Clarke and Ayling are good examples. They've got more "personality" so they're more noticed and therefore automatically deemed as being better.

Engel quietly doing the business goes unnoticed, so as soon as he does make a mistake it's the only thing fans remember.

A good comparison is Engel this season vs. Giles last season. Most would be surprised.
