Maddo post match

Maddo made some very interesting comments after the match yesterday. He was talking about players out on loan. He said other coaches had told him Bilongo and I think Brynn will be playing Championship football next season. The interesting part was he wasn't sure if it would be with Boro.

Bilongo is the interesting one. He was sent out very late to non league. And apparently is being scouted by teams in our league.

The insunation of this is that there is a feeling we are not using our academy players that could cut it in our first team.

For a club employee to be saying this is prodding at there being differences of opinion on their readiness. Carrick doesn't actually seem that keen on giving the kids meaningful experience.

His subs are all the same every week - Dijksteel, Silvera, Engel. Those kids who do get on the bench never get on. I wonder if it is starting to bug those at the club who work with the kids and reckon they could do a job.

I think Brynn Is a difficult one, we've signed Seny Dieng and he's first choice and you can't put the lad as an understudy it would stunt his development

As for Billongo I think he's good enough to be at least a part of our squad. Along with a few others. I'm hoping we secure safety fairly quickly and give them all a chance

At what point were Jamie Pollock, Alan Moore, Phil Stamp, Craig Harrison, Anthony Ormerod, Mark Summerbell, Joe Bennett, Tav, Gibson etc etc deemed good enough to be given a go in the first team?

I'm not counting the class of 2004 as most of them went on to play for the first team

Maddo will always advocate for the younger players though, I think he works or worked at the academy in some capacity doesn't he?

There's nothing wrong with wanting to give the kids a chance if they are good enough but there is real frustration boiling over in the stands right now and it's probably not the best time to expose kids who will make mistakes to an atmosphere like that.

Imagine if Sol Brynn makes a howler like Tom Glover has and then has to deal with absolute howls of anger from the stands? Or Bilongo does what Ayling did for their first goal yesterday and then has to put up with the same?

I don't entirely disagree with the decision to not bring on the kids half the time tbh, cause we're basically always in a losing position, needing a goal, or the games gone and by that point I think it's not really the best situation or environment to bring young players on. Ideally you'd either give them chances in cup games or games where you're a heavy favourite and just make the bold choice to give them a start, or bringing them on when you're coasting to a win like when he brought McCabe on at 4-0 up over Preston.

Maddo always thinks the youngsters are great, as you say he knows the players so he backs them but Carrick has already shown with Hackney that he has no problem at all with giving the youngsters a chance if they're good enough so I think it's a bit harsh for people to use it as a criticism. Especially when most of us have no clue how good any of them are.

that fullback thomas, he is weak, slow, generally not very good at football and easy to beat. struggling to see why hes in the team or even in the squad. just that donkey alone costing us money, when we could play engel and have one of the kids as back up, who from memory of them at fullback, are all faster and stronger than thomas anyway.

Somehow Thomas manages to be an even worse defender than Giles was only without any of the attacking ability to balance it out. I don't get this signing at all!

Reflects what Maddo said about not using our academy players.

Sonny Finch is 18 [19 in August] and not far behind when Coburn [19] was scoring for us against Tottenham. He scored again last week. He's got more balls and more skill than some of those who “played” yesterday! Why do Carrick and Woodgate persist in having lads like Finch sat on the bench watching far-less skilled players wearing a Boro shirt messing it up: get them on, even if It's for half an hour? Not just 5 minutes at the end of another defeat ? Perhaps we're getting ready to sell him?

How many times does a player have to sign a “new” contract before he gets a serious opportunity to show what he can do?

The thing with young players is they have a rawness to try the difficult pass or just have a dig, the problem now is this is over coached and all about possession, how many times have goals gone in against us this season from having a dig, deflections, direct goals follow ups all happen from having a go, we over pass this is on the coaching and managers tactics.

Young players will make mistakes but they will normally run harder and put in more effort as they are trying to make a claim.

If I where one of the youngest I would be banging on the gaffers door saying play me, I'm better than X let me prove it !

Finch has been injured until the last month or so. It takes time to build fitness back up. I expect he will play before the season is out, Carrick rates him.

He played last week and scored. I appreciate your point about his fitness. We get fed a continuous monologue about players not being ready, or “injured”, or the dogs chewed their boots......Finch was given a chance under Leo [!] at the same time as Hackney. Admittedly, different players at different times and Sonny is younger, but won't this young man start questioning whether he's going to get his chance?

Along with McCabe, Hannah, Bridge, Woolston, Gibson and a few others, they are miles better than Greenwood, Ayling, OBrien and Thomas. Obviously, you wouldn't put them all on together and expect them to perform, but they need feeding in over the remaining games, so we don't have riff-raff from other clubs cluttering the dressing room next season. Sooner have inexperienced winners than experienced losers.
