Yeah, he was Channel 5's lead commentator before doing Robot Wars. Think he also commentated on a few Sky Sports games in the very first PL season

He did LOADS of regional work before that as well on London stations etc.

I actually think I'm one of the few that thinks JP is alright at football commentary - certainly not terrible. (I've never watched the Robot show). I know he gets a bit enthusiastic at times but thats fair enough. I just think it is the done thing to not like him.

I like him too. Never afraid to give an opinion on VAR for instance but also he haa a genuine fan knowledge of clubs and indeed of club's fans

I thought JP was perfect for Robot Wars (him and Craig Charles basically made that show what it was) but his footy commentary can be a little OTT at times.

I am not sure maddo is an expert summarizer, despite his job title. He is fun to listen to though.

The utility commentators (across various disciplines and sports) are/ were worth their weight in gold. David Vine - skiing, weightlifting, superstars and Quizball. Motty even did tennis as well as football. Barry Davies did Hockey, Alan Weekes skating and football.

Ha well if you think he's terrible that’s up to you. I honestly don’t find myself getting wound up about commentators and pundits. In a way, I wish I did so I could join in with more of the banter on here.

He actually started his radio career at Capital Radio in 1987 and made a name for himself with his excitable shouting style akin to a Brazilian commentator. When he got to grown up radio - Radio 5 live he tempered his commentary style appropriately.
