Anybody on here been one? What's it like etc?

Was talking to a friend of mine who is a Steward at Sheff Wed. He loves it and was telling me that the Sheff Wed stewards have been offered work at some music festival - not bad if you've got the time, love the match etc.

A mate of mine was a steward at the Riverside and never got to see a ball kicked.

Back in my student days at Hull Uni I used to be a steward at Boothferry Park. Thought it would save me the £6 entrance fee as me and one of my housemates who was Scottish had got in the habit of going to Hull City for our mutual footy fix.
Packed in after 4 months as was manning a turnstile and saw b***r all of the match.
Final straw was when Hull beat Crewe 7-1 on the Saturday and York 3-0 on the Tuesday and I only saw the one goal.
Went back to paying £6 at gate and a few pints in the pub instead :)

Hated it to be honest, put me off football fans for a couple of seasons, although this was during our crap years under Strachan and Mowbray.

Only good thing was sometimes being able to just watch the match in the concourse.

Did you take some abuse? I couldn't be ar*** with that!

Back in the South stand/Ayresome days, I remember one particular over zealous steward getting dogs abuse every game (Silver Fox)

He would spend a lot of the game pointing people out to the police, I did not agree with it at the time but looking back at it he must have seen the years the game was overwhelmed with violence and he was doing what he thought was right in turning the tide and to be fair he did have an impact.

Do you remember him?

He was a senior steward or something, he seemed to have the freedom to roam.

+ I heard him speaking a few times and it was obvious he had contempt for any 'lads'

T
The Red Faction is the modern day version of the South Stand, the guys who sat up there were inventive with the songs they created, but with an extra edge.
Definitely!

Was a great atmosphere! We were fairly central rather than to the right with the boys.

It started slowly over several years but by the mid term of promotion from the 3rd Division it was firmly established as a base, I mostly stood on the chicken run in front from 86, it was a rogues gallery down there. The festive period game against the Mackems in 85, a load of lads came in just after KO wearing Safc scarves and hats, I thought here we go , but it turned they were Boro they had just robbed the takings from a turnstile and were sharing the notes out openly on the terrace. The gazette said later they were looking for Sunderland fans in connection 🤣.

The best was Freddy Boswell who policed the North Stand during the McClaren years.

Did as little as possible, and would only tell you off for standing when his seniors were watching.

:ROFLMAO:

Yes - remember a few times when it got out of hand - Bristol C and Celtic to name 2.

Yeah, it was always daft stuff after we lost or if we were playing crap at half time.

I was only young and just done the job for some beer money while at Uni and got to watch some of the games and be paid for it. Thankfully never had to do anything serious, but it really made me look at football in a different way, same with stewards actually.

Ended up just sacking it off after a season, training was pointless and the 'seniors' were clueless.
