Matt Crooks

I would be very disappointed to see Matt Crooks leave unless someone wants to pay silly money, which isn't going to happen. He scores goals, gets assists, has great movement around the box. Accomplished finisher with his feet and in the air. Great character and leader in the squad, who gets the best out of others, especially Jones. Like all players he has his limitations, but he has been a great signing for us, for very little money. Why on earth would we weaken ourselves and strengthen a competitor by letting him go? It would be very poor business.

I honestly don't think Carrick will be wanting Crooks to leave but as other have suggested there are many factors to consider, if we can't guarantee game time crooks may want to leave, we extend his contract by a year to 2025 someone may well be offering a 2/3 year deal and they may offer us what we paid for him or a little more so with everything in mind if crooks leaves he will be leaving because everything matches what both parties want.

I would love crooks to stay as I feel he is pivotal to some of our best play and always pops up with an assist or goal which is so crucial at the tail end of the season.

They might not improve, I'd keep him until they're producing what he can, particularly Greenwood and Silvera.
They might not but the lieklihood of all three not improving is slim, the likelihood of crooks improving is negligible.

Ideal world we keep him, but ignores the fact we can only register so many players and that would leave us overloaded with tens, but short elsewhere, it would also deny playing time and improvement opportunity to players with a far higher glass ceiling than crooks.

This is the way we are developing our squad now

He's getting the results, when fit and playing, now. Why dispense with that?

We'll only ever have a side that goes nowhere if performing players are sold prior to a younger player's development. Howson isn't going to improve but he too is a vital member of the squad, as was Smith prior to his injury.

I'm not aware of him being a big earner, which would make his exit more explainable. I can't see it happening at the moment.

i disagree with this. Crooks has improved as a footballer each season for me. Some on the interplay with smith/dijksteel and jones is fantastic.

You cant sell important, experienced players to develop young players. We already lack experience as it is. We also didnt even fill our squad quoter in the first half of the season did we?

I’m afraid that is the model. You take one step back to take two steps forward

He does play well with those guys, and he does have his moments, but that has to be balanced with how frequently it breaks down with a silly mistake or how that combination is never going to get us promoted.

I like crooks and I wouldn’t disagree that he’s improved, I just believe he hasn’t improved enough to be reliable in a Carrick team

Most of the squad are unreliable even the best players but i would say he is one of our most consistent performers. I think his numbers would be hard to replace for what you would get in a transfer fee.

i agree on that combination not getting us promoted but i would more put that more down to jones and dijksteel myself but others will disagree.

His numbers might be hard to replace, might not, but those numbers don't tell the full story. at worst we sell him in the summer, he's been a decent servant and will get a good contract somewhere

Sell him why, to raise cash, to cut the wage bill?

Surely it would make more sense to move on a big earner like McNair?

I don't think we'd raise much in the transfer market from either, which is what 'the model' is all about. Buy cheap, sell high.

"but those numbers don't tell the full story" goals are goals, and assists are assists. what else do you want?

He has also had about 4 poor games all season and they came right before he was left out through injury. He been one of our best players and you want him gone for players like greenwood, rogers plus other new players of their ilk that have and will be up and down from game to game.

Crazy suggestion

We need to add to what we have

Rogers yes greewood absolutely not. Crooks can go for me if we replace with someone with more technical ability and similar experience

Currently better than Silvera & Greenwood by a million miles. I'ld also say right now, a better bet than Rogers. Plus, we literally have no options on the bench. Aye, lets flog him for next to nowt because he can look a bit clumsy.

Christ, he is one of our most effective players.

Crooks might not be a McNair/Howson earner but he will be on a decent wage, prime of his career, top half Championship team, regular starter, just signed a contract extension.

Agree with most of the above, great player to have around. Seems to regularly get written off and come back stronger.
