Matt Fitzpatrick - superb

One of our very best. Major winner last year. The fact that he wasn’t in the short list for SPOTY was a crime.

It was thrilling to watch, his second shot on the 18th (3rd play off hole) was different class. I really thought Spieth would've made one of his putts on the previous two holes mind. I love Fitzpatrick though, he's very humble, and has one of the best caddies on his bag.

Phenomenal talent, still very young and seems a really well balanced young lad, if the Netflix documentary was a good reflection of him.

Just watched the brief highlights on YouTube. What a shot that was on the 3rd playoff. Reminiscent of Christy O'Connor Jnr in 1989.

When did they start leaving the flags in when putting?

Its something Fitzpartick does as he prefers it. The flag was puit back in after Spieth's putt.

But it didn't use to be an option did it?
The last time I played (a long time ago) the flag had to be removed if you were putting on the green. Or at least held and removed before the ball reached the hole.
It could be left in if you were putting from off the green.

It was a thing which started during covid to supposedly limit the spread of germs from multiple people handling the flag.

Sounds plausible and thanks for the answer.
But after getting my finger out and checking for myself, the rule was changed in Jan 2019, before Covid.
It was to speed up the game and help the vast majority of golfers who don't play with a caddy.

Good watch. Spieth had really good chances to win at the first two play off holes - really unlucky at the first. Mind you, Fitzpatrick had a good chance in regulation play at the 17th.
After a poor start to the season, he's come back well. Always looking to improve his play. Not sure I could do what he does, in noting down every shot he's played. That's some dedication!

It is a good reflection of him. He’s got a lovely family, as a family they used to holiday at the harbour town resort (where it was played this last week) every year since Fitzpatrick was six years old! Showed the family pics last night…
Tremendous lad, fantastic talent only negative is all his family are mad sheff utd fans!
And with his caddy (billy foster) being a mad Leeds supporter, they have some interesting banter!

Wonderful win though against Spieth who is as tough as they come, clearly Fitzpatrick has belief oozing from him after his us open victory because Spieth and Fitzpatrick had good chances to win but like someone else said, his iron shot into the 3rd and final extra hole was phenomenal.
Absolute nerves of Sheffield steel (!)

This is incorrect - flags were permitted to be left in from 1st January 2019 as part of a new 30-rule change from the USGA and governing bodies. Changes were made so that the speed of play would be given the opportunity to be increased. COVID rules did include not touching the flag but the initial reason was for speed of play. Fitzpatrick and De Chambeau were the only two notable players who continued to putt with the flag in.

Fitzpatrick is really turning into a top player on the PGA. Very consistent and a swing which rarely goes array. Plus having Billy on the bag is always another reason to back him.
