McGree and Silvera

I see Australia do not play their first Asia Cup game for 2 weeks. Considering our depleted squad you would have thought that there would have been a bit of flexibility to have allowed them to have been involved yesterday. It could have made all the difference to the result. Very disappointed!

Got to agree. Surely they could have been included yesterday and then flew out this week

FIFA rules dictate clubs have to release players by a certain amount of time before international tournaments start

There's not much you can do about it. Also can't really blame Australia or the players, those 2 weeks will be important for working on tactics, team bonding etc. Well within their rights to have their squad all assemble at the same time.

Mind you there's an argument it would have benefitted them to let McGree in particular get some more football under his belt.

Egypt play their first game in AFCON 14 Jan....Mo Salah played for Liverpool yesterday (01 Jan)

Japan play their first game in Asia Cup 14 Jan....Endo played for Liverpool yesterday (01 Jan)

Australia play their first game in Asia Cup 13 Jan....McGree and Silvera weren't in the squad for us yesterday (01 Jan)

So have we been shafted because of 1 day? 😭

We knew the situation when we signed these players. I really do dislike the way the Asian and African international tournaments are treated as a complete inconvenience by so many within European football. If you don’t like it, don’t sign players from the nations involved.

It used to be Sam Allardyce. He’d signed loads of African players and then moan about them being called up to play for their countries. Now it’s most managers, coaches, pundits, journalists.

I think as well, if clubs can’t cope with losing a player or two for a handful of games then it doesn’t exactly reflect well on their planning and recruitment. Boro are unlucky because there are so many injuries but generally you know these lads are going away for a month before or when you sign them. You can’t moan about it.

Given our situation you would have thought that Australia might have shown some goodwill, they are our players after all. Riley especially could have done with the game time.

When do the Japanese squad meet up? Australia met up yesterday, hence Riley and Sam flying out yesterday
You've got to get there early or you get a small room.

What people are saying, there could have been a bit of flexibility around the situation. Nothing is written in stone that you have to meet by a certain date and we have all seen players joining international squads late.

They played a friendly yesterday, and only named the squad after it.

I'd be surprised if this is all down to 1 day's difference, 12 days seems a fairly arbitrary cut-off point.

I mean Son played on the Sunday Salah played last night and they both going to tournaments I feel we should of pushed harder to keep mcgree for yesterday if he came on as a sub the energy he brings could of stopped that 2nd half slide

To be fair to the club it's only a handful of fans that are moaning.

The club may have spoken to the aussie fa and been told no. Maybe the club spoke to the players and the players said no. Perhaps the club just honored a prior arrangement as they should do. This is football not life or death.

We signed McGree well before the announcement of the details of AFC Asian Cup. It's only the location of the tourno which has meant it has had to be delayed from a normal Summer tourno to this winter.
The last four Asian Cups including this one have been held in January.

We signed an Australian international midfielder. You can’t complain about him being called up to play for his country. The club must’ve known about this before they signed him. To be fair I haven’t Carrick complain about these tournaments and call ups, it’s the people around the edges doing the complaining.

Is the Japan player who scored two for Coventry yesterday not in the Japan squad? I suppose if he is the one day made the difference.

Actually he did a bit and I was a bit disappointed (I agree with your comments).

"It's not ideal to have a tournament in the middle of a season to be honest, I don't really get why it is in the middle of a season but it is what it is. We knew it. It's not like something has been thrown upon us, we'll deal with it."

It's obviously in the middle of our season but most asian countries play calendar year seasons so it isn't for them.

Oh wow I’d never seen those comments. Fair enough. It is disappointing to read that.
