Meeting/vote tonight regarding Middlesbrough Development Corporation

Progess Corcy, I'm all for progress. Absolutely **** all gets done with all the political bickering and opposition for opposition's sake that goes on at the minute.

Hopefully there'll be enough Independents and Conservatives in attendance to vote this through, because you know what Labour are going to do.. can't see it though, which would be a shame. It was swiftly backed in Hartlepool by all.

By all?

You mean by all the Tories and Independent Tories- You should try be a little more clearer.

Strange that it's only being proposed in the two rotten boroughs though, isn't it?

The 'independrnts' are Tories, they've already conned the electorate, so why don't they just get on with it in the way that the borough across the Tees from them are. Like the incapable crowd running the nation, what's stopping them. Why the need for a development corporation after our failed experiment with them and the disastrous state they left the town centres in?

Mayor Preston has looked around the room at his side of the chamber and decided that he needs to look elsewhere.

A metro Mayor whose only real involvement with business ended up failing- owing a small fortune to Stockton Borough council amongst others.
A Police and crime commissionaire whose only involvement with the police is accepting a police caution for handling stolen goods. A deputy mayor who has zero experience of running a business or even advising them.
The rest we know even less about.

Preston's failure to see good elected people on his side of the chamber is damming, and it's embarrassing, some councillors who have supported him for 4 years have taken a slap in the face, well, this week I'll be supporting them councillors and the people of our town who can be trusted to elect their own leaders and will vote against this undemocratic power and asset grab.

This isn't democracy, it's classic cronyism and we should have nothing to do with it.

Can the opener poster explain why this is needed? Why is the £18m investment conditional on this?

Transferring public assets in this way doesn't exactly sound like it would be in the public interest and not at all open to any sort of corruption.
It's so that, as in the case of the TDC, there's money to be siphoned off. You don't want it all spending on development when there's pockets to be lined

This is history repeating itself.
The Tories starve councils of funding and when the councils complain and have to increase council tax the Tories say "It's nothing to do with us Guv"!

This will starve the council of more funds and your council tax will have to go up again, just to cover statutory duties and you guess what the Tories will say!!

It'll remove all the drawn out decision making hoops that need jumping through, red tape nonsense and the snailllllllllllllls pace that the council currently operate at, to get things done. Quickly.

The government have already said that £18m is available to fuel redevelopment in the town, but only to a Development Corporation.. that's because they know if those funds go into a council that moves as quick as Phil Whelan, it'll still be sat there in a backlog of ***** waiting for things to get kicked off and underway and nothing will get done.

As I mentioned above. Forward motion is what's needed. Not waiting for the backwards council to process and progress things that take years.

It's VERY frustrating hearing about things and then years down the line we're still waiting as the council have their finger up their ****.

Ah right, it's for less scrutiny and accountability. What could go wrong?

Your theory is being proved wrong around the country. You've only got to look across the river at it being done right, without the need for spivs.

Wouldn't it be more simple just removing the red-tape and hoops councils have to jump through because of Government legislation ?

Let's hope it get's voted through.. 🤞 instant wins to be had if it does.

Can't see it like, can you Lodger pal? Not with Ronald McDonald on the charge.
No I think this would be absolutely terrible for Middlesbrough. An appalling set back for everyone to give away chunks of ths town from public ownership or public accountability to a private company. I am really concerned that is a terrible backward step. Everyone in Middlesbrough could be a major loser.
Am totally against this move
