Mendez Laing

As I say, if it were Newcastle, Burnley or Derby this board would be laughing their heads off.

Don't think people would be laughing at all.
I was gutted when he looked set to sign for Derby, as he was excellent for Cardiff and thought he'd be a very good signing.

You might see people laughing if it was Newcastle, but that's because they're a Premier League club and their targets and finances are of a higher standard than ours and they'd have just signed a free agent formerly of the Championship.

As others have said - he looks like a big fella with an unusual body shape to me, rather than fat. He also seems to have no neck.

And what's with people calling Britt fat?? He's a lot of things, but fat isn't one of them, no matter how much some people would love it to be true. Concentrate on his real weaknesses rather than making one up.

Britt occasionally reveals his six pack when he lifts his shirt. I don't think hes fat hes just not very good at football.

For balance Alan Foggon was not exactly Kate Moss but was the fastest in the team over 50 yards. So I read

Not really, it's not so much the act of taking coke (which is obviously illegal) it's more the fact that it demonstrates that he's highly unprofessional and doesn't learn a lesson / grasp a second chance, and so I wonder why people think he's suddenly going to become the new George Friend all of a sudden.

It does say on the government website that it is illegal to take drugs here: https://www.gov.uk/penalties-drug-possession-dealing, however there is no sentencing guidelines and I am sure it is not illegal to take drugs only to possess or supply. I don't think he did anything actionable by a court or the police. Of course he had to be in possession of cocain to snort it, or I suppsoe someone could have brought it, in which case no crime was committed by him.

The thread is indeed about ML, but a theme within is him being supposedly overweight.
IMHO he is currently no more overweight and unfit than Assombolonga, which is why I drew the comparison.
If Mendez Laing had signed elsewhere there would have been moans about how we hadn't tried hard enough to sign an excellent championship player, who our manager had links with.

I know which of the two I hope is pulling on a shirt for us next season.

I thnk I'll reserve judgement Indeedio, I hope he comes good, of course. His taking cocaine doesn't interest me one way or the other to be honest.

He didn't cost us anything and I can't imagine his contract is anything silly. I'd say it's a reasonable gamble that he's overcome his demons.

Don't think he looked fat at all.

He's just got an unusual body shape.

He hadn't played league football since last July, bound to be rusty.
I’m glad you said that - when he came on I thought he had a very very odd shaped body.

Any player who's stocky or barrel chested gets called "fat" by fans. Viduka was another. Don't think it while he was here, but remember Windass had ongoing banter with sky presenters (kammy or soccer AM?) about his % body fat, which was really low, but fans still called him fat.

As if someone has even suggeste NML is obese!?! The irony being half the people calling him fat probably are obese themselves. He's nowhere near.

Looks like another in the long list of overweight unfit players we seem to attract.

He looks at least 2 stone overweight and could give that big bloke at Wycombe a run for his money when it comes to getting a fry-up

Might just be able to replace BA and CA but that wouldn't be asking much.
I find this really harsh an uncalled for to be honest, as other people have said he's just an unusual shape and naturally a well-built bloke. Do you really think Warnock would have signed him if he was 2 stone overweight, or overweight at all for that matter?

If you have instagram take a look on there, looks like he's been working hard during his ban and he doesn't look out of shape by any stretch of the imagination.

He has my full support - i've always liked the look of him at cardiff and i was pleased we signed him. Hope he can get up to speed quickly.

Looks like he had weight and disciplinary problems at Peterborough too earlier in his career but also extended spells when he was the best player in their team. Maybe he plays his best football when he feels he has a point to prove.

He is a gamble and it might not work out at all but at least he looked like he wanted to get on the ball and try to make things happen in his little cameo on Saturday. Whatever happens, he certainly won’t be as boring and beige as the likes of Saville and Morsy or as easy for defenders to bully off the ball as Akpom and Britt.

Well he signed Akpom

Maybe we can use his physique to our advantage , as the target man striker .
Strong , holds the ball up , knows how to score .
I don't mean put balls in the air ,I mean play it into his body , use his strength , and have Kebano , Watmore , Or whoever , feeding off him .
He won't get bullied , so use it .
Can't be any worse than that plan at the moment.

Exactly. MFC is a football club, not a benevolent home for footballing waifs and strays who have gone off the rails.

Surely Warnock would have looked at him when he turned to sign the papers and thought "hold on a second".

It's only 11 weeks to the end of the season. If this bloke manages to lose a stone a month he'll still be overweight by June.
Desperate days obviously

Who else was out there at the time and tbf he cracked them in the first few games. Watmore hardly rocking it at the moment
Watmore has only started 3 out of our last 8 games. He our top scorer in goals per minute (apart from Browne who's out for the season).

Of course I did, and I'm not suggesting that we don't for NML, as I've said above he can improve the team.

I'm merely pointing out that he isn't an innocent little kid who is blameless in this, and has made a one off mistake (he was caught TWICE in a year, suggesting he's not exactly remorseful).

It's the willingness to overlook what he's done because he's supposedly a decent footballer that I'm laughing at. Imagine if Newcastle, or Burnley, had signed him - this board would be in uproar about a lack of morals in football etc.
To be fair, we don’t know the circumstances of why he was taking drugs. He has documented mental health struggles and it may well be linked to that. I am not condoning it in anyway, but he has served his punishment and should be allowed to get on with his life and get his career back on track.
