Same person now makes money advertising gambling sites.Massively life consuming addiction. Hard to believe someone can be so consumed, while still being at the peak of their game.
it is so sad to see someone lose so much of their life in what from the outside often looks like an amazing life being lived.
Hope he gets to enjoy some of his later years. Was sad to see at the end he had already reached back for the gambling when covid hit. Shows how much of a grip these things can have on our being.
saw him on sky yesterday and thought how much he looks an old man, don t watch the football show typically but they were all in suits etc a new image i guess and merson struck me as dressing like an old man in the 1960's
Can remember him receiving a frosty reception on his return. Always wondered what Gazza said to him in the tunnel. His move to Villa made me the most angry I have ever been as a Boro fan - more than the 3 points. I hated him for years.
Despicable commentsWeak man who has become a rent a quote .
Regurgitating the same old tales he has put in previous books to try and make a few bob.
Good footballer but a poor excuse of a man.
Also not a great viewI wonder does it cover the real reason he left which was Lorraine giving him an ultimatum on finding just what his off the field activities really were. Nothing whatsoever to do with gambling, drinking or Middlesbrough FC.
It was sickening cowardice by Merson to blame the club and "culture".
He is one man who gets no sympathy, support or admiration from me.
Always remember the Gazette started a campaign at the time, urging Boro fans to write to Merson and try to persuade him to stay at the club.Weak man who has become a rent a quote .

Ye it does say a lot about him, he suffered greatly mentally.Always remember the Gazette started a campaign at the time, urging Boro fans to write to Merson and try to persuade him to stay at the club.
I remember sending a letter and telling him that I was young kid and he was my idol. I'd included a self-addressed envelope, in the hope I'd receive a reply at least.
It would have been a nice touch if he had have replied, as it would have made my life and maybe even helped soften the blow of him leaving.
Of course, I never received a reply.
You don't forget those kind of things. It says a lot about the bloke.
His illness didn't prevent him from speaking to the press, slandering the club.Ye it does say a lot about him, he suffered greatly mentally.
it’s a game of football, it amazing to how many people make it personal about them. It says a lot about them posters
I don't think responding to fan mail will have been particularly high up on his list of priorities at the time. Sounds like he was going through hell. His illness didn't prevent him from speaking to the press, slandering the club.
I wasn't suggesting that I was shocked he'd left the club after I'd written a letter to him, just making the point that it would have been a nice gesture if he'd have replied. It would have been a real show of class.
He probably needed the stamp.Always remember the Gazette started a campaign at the time, urging Boro fans to write to Merson and try to persuade him to stay at the club.

Damn, I never thought of that. And to think I've held a grudge all these years. He probably needed the stamp.
