Middlesbrough eye move for Dan Barlaser

Definitely prefer him to some Prem U23 'wonder kid' who'd probably get kicked from piller to post.

A few Rotherham fans are saying he's class on twitter. So I'll take that.

I read the mags get 40% sell on. I'm not sure if true. That could be a snag although they'd get nothing if they leave it to the summer.

Unless they get an offer of over a million, can't see them accepting it unless he pushes to leave. Their best chance of staying up this season is if they keep their better players. Be good if we can get him now, otherwise we can wait till the summer. Wouldn't pay over the odds for him, just to get him in January (unless Carrick desperately wants him).

.....otherwise we can wait till the summer.......
Although I doubt we'll pay much for him, I don't think we can wait till summer.

I think we desperately need another body in now, if we lose Hackney and/or Howson we are screwed.

Although Mowatt has looked more comfortable in recent cameos, I wouldn't want to rely on him to maintain our play-off push.

McNair never looks that comfortable in midfield for me and judging by how many minutes he's had under Carrick could well be on his way out, and Crooks now very much seems to be considered a forward.

Howson and Mowatt are out of contract at the end of the season too, so we have one 'proper' first team midfielder for next season in Hackney, a utility defender/midfielder who doesn't seem to be in the managers plans in McNair and Crooks who is now solely being utilised further forward it seems.

Even if Howson signs on, he shouldn't be a guaranteed starter at his age IMO. We need another starter and another covering player to stay where we are bodies wise, that's without strengthening, and without anyone else being moved on.

You'd think so. But then they operate in a very different world to us. Anything close to £1m might be quite significant for them.

They could (for instance) use half of it recruiting one or two long term replacements and the other half might be needed to keep the club financially stable? I've no idea what state they're in to be fair.

Can they afford to turn a fee down now regardless of what division they'll be in next year, knowing they'll lose him for free in the summer? 🤷🏼‍♂️

Rotherham are sure to put a daft price tag on his head.

Couldnt really blame them if they did, given the position they're in.

Surely our meteoric rise in form means setting sights higher than a bog standard midfielder from a club free-falling into League 1?

Matt Crooks ended up being a great signing, bought from Rotherham after they'd fell in to League One and has been a key part in our "meteoric rise'

Right now it would only take one or two bad results for us to potentially be in the bottom half again, we can't exactly sell ourselves as a sure thing yet.

But like Festa says above, they're not in our league pretty much financially. Even though we owe our owner £140 million! They're getting nothing in June regardless, £750k may pay for a replacement for him they've already got lined up? Or that £750k pays for their leckie bill for the season, we just don't know.

It may not happen, because they value him so high giving us a FU price to keep him, or we (or even he) might want to go on a free, either so we don't pay a fee, or he might want a juicy signing on fee, it's not like he's going to be rolling in cash with his career so far.

You would think with his roots and Carrick's roots and them playing the same position he'd be very keen to come, the significant financial boost won't be putting him off either.

If Carrick wants him, I'm down with it.
I think it's one of those deals where, you're a Midfielder playing for Rotherham and a team with a huge chance of the play offs comes calling with a manager who was an elite Midfielder, you try and push that.
Come the summer we could be in the PL or gearing up for a promotion challenge and no longer looking at him. Like Crooks, he could think this is his chance

Yeah.
I'm not expecting us to pay them a daft amount.
Barlaser himself holds all the cards here.

exactly.

If we paid them 1m it would be the 6th highest fee they've ever received. Will Vaulks is their record sale at 2m and wouldn't be in our top 40 sales. Not playing billy big bollox, but we're in a different financial league and it'd be hard for them to say no to 1m.

They only paid 250k for Barlaser from an FFP perspective he is ~60k of debt on his contract. To bring in 1mill would be really useful for them moving forward, cashflow if they go down, and FFP to invest if they stay up.
