Middlesbrough's lost pubs

My grandad told me of a steet .with 10-12 pubs alone in it. Think he grew up in old cannon park area. He might have mentioned pubs being there or over the border. Memory fails me. I know his 2 older brothers were alcoholics. So not a good situation for some families.

72 pubs in st Hilda's alone back in the old days.
I imagine it was lively in the late 19th century to say the least.
Thousands of young Irishman (including my great grandfather from county Antrim), spending their hard earned wages on copious amounts of beer.
Probably a bit like the wild west.
Yep, exactly like the wild west - I've read contemporary accounts that add up to that image. And - small world - my folks on one side came from Co Antrim too, the other side from Donegal.

I kid you not but Middlesbro Kentucky, who took their name from us, became a dry Town after the way our Town went. They had a gold rush and banned all drinking and it was still like that in 2007 when we visited.

Pretty sure Samson was all over the North East.

Think the mackems had Vaux Samson on their shirts at one point?? 🤔🤔

The first ever pub I went to was most likely on that video. I cant remember the name but my dad and his workmates used to call it the Red Ruin, somewhere over the border I think, or Cargo fleet. Was about 1974/5.
Would be good to find out its real name.

Been in a good few of them! My dad worked on Dock St, he used to frequent the Glass barrel on Sussex St, might even be his works VW van outside the Albion. Shame the Wee Willie didn’t feature on this 🙃🍻
