Mount Snowdon

Anyone done it?

How would you rate the difficulty for two fairly novices at this type of stuff? Me and the Mrs did a couple in the Lakes last year, cant remember the first one and the second was the old man of coniston which we managed fine.

Any other adivce, starting points, route, parking and where to stay nearby etc

A long time since i did it, but you get lots of families etc going up in summer, as long as your fitness is ok you'll be fine.
Like anywhere though it can be more dangerous than it appears if bad weather rolls in

I walked the Old Man of Coniston last spring and it absolutely killed me. My muscles were sore for days and I had the trots for about a week afterwards, which apparently can happen if you put your body through something it’s totally unprepared for. I wasn’t fit enough, had no idea how big or challenging it was beforehand, and was wearing the wrong clothes.

Just a warning to anyone thinking of getting stuck into a challenge without preparing properly first!

It's a walk in the park. Three hours at an easy pace up paths. If memory serves there was one section with a drop on one side but the way was yards wide. Just have proper boots and clothing on. Only idiots do a walk in trainers and jeans.

I been up Snowdon from pretty much all of the well published routes.

I suspect from ThePrisoners experience, he probably went from Llanberis. It is pretty much a well trodden tourist route and pretty hard to go wrong but can be very busy.

Avoid the route that includes Crib Goch.

My favourite route up is from the south, the Watkin Path. Takes you through some old slate mines and great scenery. There are even places to take a dip in the icy stream on the way back. Car park right next to the start point too, but you have to get there early. Last time I was there, loads of cars parked on verges etc were being ticketed by the police!

Yes have done the miners track up which is not as easy as following the rail line up from Llanberis but a lot more fulfilling. Start at the YHA carpark.

The pyg track also starts from the same place which is shorter but more scrambly.

It's not a difficult walk really if you have a fair level of fitness. IIRC it only got steep right near the top, other than that it was a nice walk for a few hours, been about 20 years since i did it, but reckon I could comfortably walk it now at 47.

There was couples in the 70's on the way back down, when we were going up that must have set off at first light. if it's a nice day, it's beautiful when you're up there.

Edit.... oh FK! I'm 48! not 47!

Done it a few times. Not that difficult if you have reasonable fitness. Going up on the Tourist Track is a pain as it’s so busy and it’s very steep at the start.
I would park in Llanberris and then catch the local bus to Pen Y Pas. Go up Snowdon on the Pyg Track (avoiding Crib Goch) and then come back down the Tourist Track ( following the rail line) into Llanberris. That’s a route we’ve done a few times and works well.

I always find starting at the bottom works for me.

I’m laid up in bed with man flu and bored now. Does it show? 😳

You will really enjoy it whichever way you go. If you park at Peny Pas the miners track is easy for quite a long way and then climbs steeply. The Pyg is a more steady gradient. It's a matter of personal preference, but I'd pick the Miners to go up and the Pyg to come down, simply because I find steep descents hard on the knees.

Although the people saying avoid crib goch are 100% right in your case, I'd say its the best hiking experience you can have in England and Wales personally. Only attempt it if its not windy or icy and if your not scared of heights, I'd doesn't take any greater levels of fitness than the other routes up Snowden.

It was my favourite climb of the three peaks challenge about 10 years back. Lovely place.

I'm thinking of taking the family up there this year, but with the little one we would probably get the train up and walk down. Seems it's quite expensive to stay in the vicinity of the National Park. Any suggestions on nice areas to stay within an hour? Might try to do Anglesey too

The Llanberris path is the most user friendly in a way .... you leave Llanberis itself on a road which does get very steep. Once you turn left onto the path itself, it becomes a very gentle gradient for a mile or two... wide, easy to walk on... and there is a cafe part of the way up. The main steep section is up to the Clogwyn station ... then it is reasonably straight forward to the summit. There is a section with exposure (cliff edge) to your left approaching the summit, but the path is wide.
Now, the negatives. In the winter, with ice and snow, it is actually one of the more dangerous routes to the summit...as one slip can have you sliding down for a hundred metres and then off the cliff edge. Ice axe and crampons essential in those conditions.
In the summer, it is safe...but incredibly busy. You'd find quieter city centre shopping streets. Spring and Autumn midweek might be more tolerable. The most important thing with Snowdon is the weather. You want high pressure and clear skies... otherwise you'll see nowt from the top. At the summit, in the summer, expect to queue a long time if you want to stand atop the summit cairn... see videos top follow.
If you want a coffee at the top, check when the cafe opens. It's quite late spring.

Other routes ... Crib Goch is a no no unless you are used to dangerous scrambles. Even the miners and pygg tracks have their dangerous sections in certain conditions.

But, if you get a clear day at the summit, as you'll see in the two videos to follow... it's fantastic.

Braitain's favourite walks top 3...
Snowdon is number 2.... if a man with no hands or feet can climb it, anyone can.
Note, it took me ages to find the right weather day to film this and it wouldn't have been possible the day after.
