Music in Pubs- yes or no

I am 68 years old and my drinking pals are all of a similar age. The music in our local is so loud we have to shout to each other just to make ourselves heard- Conversation is impossible. I suffer from a hearing condition and wear hearing aids. I have asked for the music to be turned down as there is no need for that sort of volume. I have explained that the loudness causes me physical pain in my ears. Going to another pub is not an option. I must stress that it is not all the time but it is becoming worse.
Is this the new normal for pubs these days?

tricky, I don't like too much noise either. try what we do, start boozing at 4pm, then we're all done by the time it starts getting busy & noisier

I went for a quiet couple of pints after work yesterday and there was a bloody DJ on and the only table free was right near the speakers. All dance remix kind of stuff. Ridiculously loud given it was around 6pm. Just looked around at everyone annoyed at having to scream to the person next to them. It's all about sensible management. There's a right time and a place for it

Music, 100% yes. I am 51, grew up in the Linny with jukeboxes but I feel now they just blast out noise for the sake of it. Dr Watson's was one of my favourite bars, but last time they had a DJ who thought he was in a 10k arena. Horrible

If they have a jukebox, rare these days, then yes. Anything vaguely dance should be left for the discotheque 😉

Yeah I like background music if it’s decent stuff (subjective I know) but not modern pop or dance.

Volume has to be considered background music. I don’t think anyone goes to the pub to listen to really loud music. You go to gigs or clubs/town centre bars for that, or you stay at home and whack something you like on.

I is actually a jukebox. The argument that is made is that people have paid for the music. Believe me , it is very, very, loud

It depends on the context. Loud music is only OK for me in town in a "night out" type setting (not that I go to such places anymore). Proper pub or local just background music.

went in the central before the Norwich match at 6 pm some mad disco on people dancing about and all and super loud pap music stayed for one literally could not chat to my mate , I sound like real old grump but fck me no need at 6 pm
