My Champions League Idea

Just coming up with new euro competition ideas.

What if they kept their european league idea, but to compete you have to leave the domestic league? You are then, for a season, competing solely in this euro league. Play everyone home and away, like a domestic league - expensive following a team away for this. Usual amounts of teams from each country qualify. At the end of the season everyone but the top 4 return to their domestic leagues and go again trying to get back to this euro league. That way the teams that have done well, deserve to compete again. The others dont have this super league safety they tried to implement.

This would give more teams a chance to win their domestic league and also to qualify for the euro competition.

The uefa cup could be that euro leagues version of the fa cup for those teams. Keep them happy with the number of competitions they take part in.

There will defo be flaws in this plan. What are they? How would you solve them?

Promotion to and Relegation from the domestic league. You could potentially have 7 teams promoted or relegated based on how that countries teams get on in the Super League, and you might not know until it's over. Doubt that'd go down too well.

I think the biggest problem so far in the CL are the group stage matches. The games tend to be very boring and end up being stale.

There's clearly money there, but the quality of matches until you get to the KO stages are normally poor.

Increasing the number of games obviously increases revenue (and that's what these owners want), but this definitely doesn't increase the quality of football (which is what fans want).

I worry the World Cup in 2026 will be like this with 48 nations battling it out.

It should be about quality not quantity....but owners and FIFA/UEFA clearly want quantity.

The irony of Perez bemoaning the boring group stage, when it was only introduced so clubs like Real Madrid were guaranteed more profit and less risk of getting knocked out early.

Liverpool lost 3 times in the group stage when they won the Champions League.

My idea:

All of the league winners of UEFA's member nations go into their own competition. 55 teams plus the UEFA Cup winners. 14 groups of 4. You could it the Champions League, for example. I don't like group phases but if you did put one into this competition then you could have, say, one group with Bayern, PSV Eindhoven, Lincoln Red Imps and Sparta Prague. That way the very smallest teams are getting guaranteed income from games against much bigger clubs, whether from TV, gate receipts and prize money from UEFA. After the group phase it is knockouts, home and away. First leg on a Tuesday, second leg on a Wednesday. No away goal rule. Final to be played at a neutral venue in a neutral country. Supporters are allocated at least 80% of the stadium.

All of the cup winners of UEFA's member nations go into their own competition. You could call it the Cup Winners' Cup, for example. I personally wouldn't have a group phase in this competition as I'd like to see an extension of domestic cups, where teams win knockout games and then try to win a continental knockout competition. Two legs, home and away, first leg on a Tuesday, second leg on a Wednesday. No away goal rule. Final played at a neutral venue in a neutral country. Supporters are allocated at least 80% of the stadium.

All of the teams that finish second and third in UEFA member nations' leagues go into a third competition. You could call it the UEFA Cup, for example. I don't like group phases but if you did put one in this competition you could make sure it was made up of two teams who finished second in their league alongside two teams who finished third. I would prefer it to be knockout but clubs might want to generate some cash, a compromise is possible. You then go into knockouts. Two legs, home and away. First leg on a Tuesday, second leg on a Wednesday. No away goal rule. Final to be played at a neutral venue in a neutral country. Supporters are allocated at least 80% of the stadium.

Winners of the Champions League automatically qualify for the following season's competition.
Winners of the Cup Winners' Cup automatically qualify for the following season's UEFA Cup competition.
Winners of the UEFA Cup automatically for the following seasons' Champions League.

Said this before, but for a competition to be called 'The Champions League', then surely only 'Champions' should be allowed to enter?

Before Bayern won the CL in 2019/20, I believe the last 'Champions' to win the CL were Real Madrid in 2017/18 and I believe prior to that it was Barcelona in 2010/11...quite ridiculous how in the last 9 seasons, only 2 winners were actually 'Champions' the year before.
