New car recommendation

Looking for a new car and looking for something that's energy and tax efficient as it'll be used as my vehicle for my business. I have pretty much always had Saab's until they went bust, and the last 4 years I have been driving a Mercedes C Class 2.1 diesel to give you a flavour of my usual preference for nice saloons. However, the time has come to take a different approach and know nothing about hybrid or electric vehicles.

Really looking for something that is much more tax efficient, cleaner for the environment but still a nice car. I don't particularly want to lease a car as I prefer to own my own and it needs to be sufficiently roomy to allow 5 of us in reasonably comfortably from time to time, though most of the time it'll just be me in the car. Quite happy with second hand vehicles and in fact, imagine that's all I will be able to have. I'm budgeting up to around £10,000 but possibly able to go slightly higher for the right vehicle. I have seen a couple of Hyundai Ioniq which look ok to me, though never driven one. Any other ideas or suggestions? Thanks :)

Octavia Estate. 😉

I've just bought the hatchback and love it. Loads of extra kit for under £13,000 with 13,000 miles on it

What sort of mileage are you doing?

I would probably look for a small petrol engine like the Audi A3 1.0 petrol, think they put it in the A4 too. Mind you'll struggle to get one for sub 10k.

I wouldn't go hybrid if you are mostly doing motorway miles as you never charge the battery so you end up just carrying the batteries and motors around as extra weight. Skoda Octavia 1.6D if it was my money.

Doesn't help you, but I've looked at the Ionique as well for when I move back. With EVs you need to look at the length of the warranty on the batteries and Hyundai are good for that.

Thanks Randy, really looking for an electric or hybrid though. Appreciate the nod though.

I generally do around 10k to 12k per year. It's mostly quite local though every week or two I do a 110 mile round trip to the Boro to see my beloved in action (when we're allowed to). For mostly local driving with the occasional trip to Boro is it worth considering the EV hybrids? My accountant has told me I really need to get away from diesel and move across to hybrid at least.

Yeah we looked at hybrid/electric , will be making that jump next time it comes to renew.

I've read good things about VW's new I.D. range but they will be well expensive at the moment.

I have the new Ioniq EV. First EV and absolutely love it. Great family car but we're only a family of 4. Depending on ages 5 might be a little tight.

The stated mileage is some of the most accurate for an EV and in the warmer months you can expect 190 miles to a full charge. At the minute with the colder weather that drops to 165ish.

Costs me about £4.50 for a zero to full charge at home though if you're minded to move to a specialist tarrif then you can charge for less that £2. When I did the sums it didn't work out as viable for me because I'm on a very good energy tariff that's no longer available.

Hyundai are pushing the Kona as a family friendly EV though I didn't really like the look of them. A bit more expensive would be the Kia Nero which is like the EV version of a Sportage, though I beleive they are making an EV Baydon of that direct model.

Never ever leased until this car but at £210 per month including all maintenence servicing. It was just too good an offer to turn down.

There's a similar offer still available I beleive

Well you are in EV territory then. The only problem being £10k and the ability to carry five in at least relative comfort. I can't think of an EV off the top of my head. You would need to look at leasing I'd think. Second hand hybrids you could consider the Toyota Auris Hybrid you can probably get an estate or hatch for £10k or the previously mentioned Ioniq

Someone on here mentioned buying from Motorpoint - they seem to have a good selection with decent lengths of warranty.

I got a new car for business use last spring. A SAAB 95 diesel estate. I did the maths and it worked out a tremendous option. £2.7k, full service history 12 months MOT. Bought from Saab specialist. Was looking at BMW, Audi and Merc at a lot more money, but once 1 worked out what I needed, rather what I desired the SAAB worked for me.

I too am a SAAB fan ( i currently have a couple of them ) and would say if you could find one in good nick then that should be your choice ( but i am biased ). The TTid's are especially good for motorway drives. And the 9-5 NG is a very good looking car.

But if you really want to go the electric route beware of battery problems on anything over 5 or 6 years old.

As for hybrids the Mitsubishi Outlander can give you great MPG.

Think they will be future classics, are parts freely available.?

Some of the cars mentioned will be a struggle for £10,000. Maybe up your budget for the right car. What about the Lexus CT200H?

If its pure EV I've always been a fan of the kia e Niro. It was one of three cars I looked at when I received to go electric. Randy ha a good shout with the id3 but I've heard there are quality control issues so best to wait for the next generation

Thats why i have my 9-5 NG. Its a punt but will hopefully go back up in value the longer i have it and its a beautiful car to drive as well. As for room for 5 you could have party in it and not even notice lol. ( It is after all over 5 metre's long )

As for parts availability, at the moment yes there is a good network of parts available for all SAAB's but some are becoming a bit harder to find ( like the light bar on the boot of the 9-5 NG ) but there are repair kits available for such things as well.

There are plenty of forums on the internet and on face book to help out as well if needed.

The 9-5 NG also shares some components with the Vauxhall Insignia so there is always that option for spares.

£10k for a nearly new car for the class of car you are looking at is unrealistic. £10k is more super mini class with say 10k to 20k miles on the clock, certainly if buying from a trader.

EVs are expensive to me, even with cheap fuel.

Cheap fuel, cheap servicing, cheap running costs, and if you get a reasonably priced one cheap car tax. No congestion charges and with the new green flash number plates you’re likely to see more benefits for owning and EV. Once you can get over the initial purchase price then it’s a no brainer to own an EV cost wise

When I was a young and dumb 18 year old a mate of mine put a 2.0L engine out of a Saab into his Vauxhall Astra. It was a perfect fit.

One of my favourite looking cars ever is the Saab 900 Turbo.
